Contemporary westerns are not a sub-genre I generally seek out but when one comes to my attention, the reading experience usually becomes a fast favorite and Bonnie Dee's The Cowboy and the City Slicker is no different. Alex and Matthew appear to be complete opposites and yet it quickly becomes clear that they are not only perfectly suited but I also can't see them with anyone else.
I've only read a couple of Miss Dee's contemporary M/M romances and though I prefer her historicals, the contemporaries are enjoyable and have never left me unhappy. The respect for the past the author shows in her historicals is equally present in the present day settings with the attention to the little details letting the reader feel as if they are right there experiencing the story.
As for Alex and Matthew, well I don't know if I could do Alex's job but he enjoys it, that is until he gets to know Matthew and then he seems to have some doubts. Matthew just wants to keep the family ranch afloat even if not necessarily as a full fledged working ranch but as a dude ranch/vacation getaway. You just know that Alex not coming clean is going to come back to bite him in the butt later on but at the same time I understand why he doesn't reveal it at first and then it just seems like fate keeps getting in the way. Watching them navigate getting to know each other and Alex's reveal is a treat despite wanting to whack Alex in the back of the head a few times for his procrastinating😉.
I won't say more other than the HEA is a given but its how the boys get there that make The Cowboy and the City Slicker a must read. I've seen some call it a "cozy" romance, personally I never quite understood the concept of "cozy" in a sub-genre setting be it romance or mystery, I guess it means the story is pretty low on the angst. Whatever you call it, be it cozy or just romance, Bonnie Dee has another winner with Alex and Matthew's story, a delightful gem that will leave you smiling with minimal heartbreak. If we're real nice and/or lucky maybe one day we'll get to see what Christmas is like at Rancho Verde *hint hint*. But seriously, just because you know the HEA is waiting at the end doesn't mean the journey getting there isn't fun, for this reader it's the journey that is the meat and potatoes of a book that I look forward to leaving me full and satisfied.
