So when Command Intelligence tags him to fly one of their agents behind enemy lines, it seems like just another routine death-defying mission. Crash landing on the planet was a piece of cake, but the gorgeous agent he delivered safely to her meeting is now believed dead and he must return to retrieve her body.

After Agent Jenna Maxwell realizes her own people attempted to have her killed, she enlists the hot stick jockey’s help. His new mission? Sneak her back onto his ship to ferret out who wanted to get rid of her and why. SERIES: Valiant Knox #3
ROMANCE: Enemies to Lovers

This is probably my favorite of the whole series! Sebastian was absolutely perfect with all his charm and jokes. The overall story line of the war between the UEF and the CSS really ramps up in this book and we're left with some very intriguing things for the future.

Sebastian Rayne: A Sub-Lieutenant in the UEF Fighter Pilot Squadron, Seb uses jokes to deflect difficult conversations. He's used to being the risk taking, wise-cracking cowboy willing to take on any mission, no matter how crazy. But ever since his best friend and partner, Lawler, was revealed to be a CSS mole, he's struggled to get his head on straight.

Jenna Maxwell: Working as a Command Intelligence Agent, Jenna, is used to pushing away all close relationships and constantly living a fake life. When her own people turn against her, she doesn't know who she can trust other than Seb. But Jenna has lived a long life in isolation and she knows taking on CI is practically a suicide mission.

What I Liked
-- Sebastian! I loved his personality and his jokes. He had me smiling throughout. Perfect blend of cocky and charming. He was just what the stoic Jenna needed.

-- The deeper look at the overarching conflict between the UEF and the CSS. Up to this point, the big story has been pretty focused inward (Kai recovering, Alpha searching for a mole) but this one really brings the whole war into perspective.

-- The revelations about Ilari and what's really going on (view spoiler)

What I Didn’t Like
-- Jenna and Seb jump into a relationship really fast considering Jenna's history and job.

-- In the beginning, there was a fair bit of misspellings considering this is from a publishing house. Not a terrible amount, but more than I expect when an editor is involved.

This may be my favourite of the Valiant Knox series -- which says a lot since I loved the other books so much! This is the series that introduced me to this author and I love love love that she continued it here. (Although I seriously think her Atrophy series is one of my all-time favorites in the sfr genre!)

Cover Fire is a solid read that builds on events of the previous books. The world expands, as does the struggle against enemy forces, while the men and women on the Valiant Knox go above and beyond the call of duty to do what is right, even when the enemy turns out to be a mole within their own forces. The hero, fighter pilot Sebastian, and heroine, undercover operative Jenna, find themselves thrown together repeatedly in this fight. Both have been betrayed and struggle to learn to trust again. Somewhere amid attacks from an unknown foe (a space ninja!), dodging fire fights, and working their way behind enemy lines, Seb and Jenna discover that love can come when you don't expect it and goes a long way to curing those internal wounds!

Best of all? An excellent setup for MORE action and romance -- feels like the overarching story is just getting started! -- so crossing my fingers and toes that another book will show up soon!

Given my lukewarm feelings towards the previous book in this series (Damage Control), I was a little hesitant about reading this book. No need! This is my favorite of the series by far – possibly of everything I’ve read by Jess Anastasi. Seb is such a light-hearted charmer, perfectly balanced by the secretive Jenna. Their chaotic adventure is fast-paced, intriguing, fun and sexy, and I really enjoyed it.

Mostly because of Seb. He’s a charming daredevil with a heart of gold, a beautiful face and emotionally bruised by previous betrayals. There is a lot more to him than the carefree face he tends to show the world, but his courage and loyalty when it came to protecting Jenna just proves what a strong man he is underneath all the hurt and humor. I loved him.

I liked Jenna too. She’s a woman who has been alone and isolated for a long time, constantly undercover, working to expose the secrets of the tyrannical CSS and help win the war. Yet, like Seb, there’s so much more to her than her spy skills. She’s also full of doubts about the work she does and the people she works for. Plus, she’s a far better person than she ever believes herself to be. She and Seb make an excellent team.

There’s rarely a dull moment in this tale as the pair of them lurch from mission to disaster to mystery to chaos. Their romance is equally explosive, pushing forward at some unsuitable moments and filled with plenty of heat. It moves pretty fast at times, but it fits the speed of the book, so I didn’t mind too much.

The speed with which people healed, however, I did have a problem with. There are some serious injuries incurred throughout, but it seems that within hours they’re all back up and bouncing straight into the action again. I would say those are some good drugs they’re using, but there isn’t a chance for any after one beating, yet the injuries are still shaken off and they’re all sprinting about the next day. There’s also a scene which implies some pretty heavy psychological damage, yet again, within a few pages it’s as if it never happened. Except it did happen and by effectively forgetting about it all, my enjoyment of the whole book was sadly undermined.

Which is a huge shame, because I thought the rest of it was great. The characters are fun, the plot is packed with action, the romance is hot and it was nice catching up with the crew of the Knox again. If you can stop yourself from getting too distracted by stuff I probably take too seriously, and can read this as the high-octane space romp it is, then you’ll probably enjoy it too.

I'm not typically a sci-fi type reader, but I loved this book! It took me two days to read because I devoured every single word, every nuance, every detail between Agent Jenna Maxwell and Sub-Lt. Seb Raynes. Hot!
Briefly, Jenna is sent on a secret mission by her CI handler, Seb is tagged to fly her deep into enemy territory and leave her to complete her mission. Since this is futuristic, Jenna is disguised save her eyes. She's cold and distant to Seb's playful, self assured, hot fighter pilot. The banter between these two was ridiculously funny at times and painfully serious at others. Seb takes Jenna to her destination and returns back to his station only to be sent out on a return trip, one to retrieve the body of the dead agent Maxwell, more importantly the information she was there to retrieve. When he arrives, he looks for her but seeing something else and then there she stands alive. He knows because it's her eyes, the eyes he's so taken with. Jenna has been set up, she's now sporting her real appearance which no one has ever seen, even her handler and her big problem is figuring out who ordered her death. Seb agrees to help her out and together they devise a story that will bring her aboard ship and she'll fit in. Meanwhile as a trained agent, she's got plenty of gadgetry at her disposal and uses it.
The main body of the story focuses on who is on what side and essentially who ordered her death and now someone is after Seb, being attacked twice, there's no mistake here that someone is cleaning house.
There's plenty of mystery, espionage, thrill and a nice sprinkle of romance (bring a fan) in this story and so many twists and turns, I really stayed glued to the pages, flipping needing to know what was going to happen. The characters from the previous two books make their appearances as well, playing a couple pivotal roles in this story. They really added to the story as secondary characters.
For my first serious spin around the block with a story like this, I couldn't have picked a better book.
It had everything and more. It was the blurb that lured me in. The book is really a must read whether you're a sci-fi fan or not, I guarantee you'll love it.
Amazing book Jess!

4.0 out of 5 stars Review: Cover Fire 20 June 2017

Cover Fire is one busy story! Jenna is a Command Intelligence agent. That loosely translates into a super spy. Her current assignment is to go deep into CCS enemy-held territory. Her and her handler approach Sub-Lieutenant Sebastian aboard the Knox and request he flies her in. He thinks they’re crazy but he takes the challenge. Once the crash land on the planet they go their separate ways. Seb hijacks another ship and heads back to the Knox only to be told that something has happened Jenna and he must return to retrieve her body. What?! He gets back only to find out not only is she not dead but now they realize her own people attempted to kill her. She asks Seb for his help, to get back to the Knox and to find out who and why somebody wanted her dead.

So much subterfuge going on. Jenna a special agent, someone trying to kill her, sneaking around finding who is after her. Whew! And Seb finds himself in the middle of it all. She's used to doing things on her own and he insists on helping her. When the methodical agent meets the reckless stick jockey and you just know sparks are going to fly.

Both have vulnerable sides. She's had to give up so much to do her job. He was deeply betrayed and as much he tries playing it off the pain has him doubting himself. Between the danger and the intrigue, the excitement just keeps building and building and along the way they find love and an HEA. Possibly not for just themselves! Hint-hint!

A final note: I try to be good about reading series in their proper order, however, I didn’t quite follow that guideline when it came to the Valiant Knox series. 2, 1 and now 3. At least I’m up to speed now on everything and let me suggest reading them in proper order, especially when it comes to Damage Control #2 and Cover Fire #3. There a major plot line that takes place in #2 that has a huge impact on Sebastian. Without that knowledge, the continuing storyline may not have the proper oomph it needs.
