Product description

Product Description

A brand new zombie/survival horror story from the author of the best-selling AUTUMN and HATER novels (optioned for film by Guillermo del Toro).

The world is dying. An abhorrent epidemic is sweeping the globe, destroying everything it touches. Contact with even a single drop of contaminated blood or saliva is enough to spread the disease. Within hours even the healthiest people are transformed into hideous, germ-spewing creatures. They hunt out the uninfected in their tens of thousands, their sole purpose to continue spreading the infection.

On a recently-built housing development on the outskirts of a large city, one man will stop at nothing to protect his family from the coming storm. Stuart has been one step ahead of the game from the beginning. His garage is stocked high with supplies, the doors and windows of his home fortified, weapons held ready in case of attack.

With each passing minute, there are more and more infected surrounding the house. With each passing minute, Stuart and his family have less food and water available. Some time very soon, the balance of power will inevitably shift.

But Stuart won’t give up on his family, no matter what the cost.

THE COST OF LIVING and ISOLATION are available in a combined paperback edition from Infected Books entitled: LAST OF THE LIVING

OMG, a suburban family besieged by zombies!

Where David Moody is exceptional is in his ability to drip feed horror and tension into everyday situations. 'The Cost of Living' begins with an ordinary trip to the supermarket. To begin, extraordinary events are few and far between - just occasional moments when things are not quite right. Horror builds gradually until it is overwhelming.

Very readable indeed.

In typical Moody style, the characters felt real and you could almost feel what they were feeling. The story was interested and I loved the ending. What did catch me out (and this is not a spoiler) but a bonus, was the many, ever smaller, stories at the end of the major story. If you liked Autumn, you will really enjoy this.

My first foray into the world of David Moody, and what a treat it was. One of the better zombie books I have read for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great story 12 October 2014
By Michael J. Souza - Published on Amazon.com

David Moody has fast become my favorite writer of apocalyptic fiction. The market is flooded with "zombie" fiction, with the majority of the stuff being not very good. Don't get me wrong, there a quite a few good writers in this genre though. I think his strong characterizations are what sets Mr. Moody apart. Also his novels just feel very realistic. No ridiculous scenes where the hero goes into a situation that has zero chance of success and comes out unscathed.
I hear some complaints that his stories are too downbeat. Look at the scenarios he writes about. They are not things where you would have much of a chance of a "happy" outcome.
If you're wondering why I don't give this book 5 out of 5 stars, to me the rating system isn't utilized correctly. I would say a 5 star book is nothing short of a literary masterpiece.
Keep up the outstanding work David, and I will keep purchasing your books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read.. 17 November 2014

I love the way you not only get the expanded version, but the original short story and Flash version as well. The extended version of The Cost of Living gives you a better insight into each character's personality and thoughts during the infection's strain on each character's fears, hopes, and views towards the other members of the family. Too bad it's over so fast, yet still better fleshed out than the original released version. Absolutely Loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Left me wondering if I'd really want to survive a zombie apocalypse. 17 July 2014
By J. Whisner - Published on Amazon.com

As usual, Moody put me inside the mind of his characters. Though it seemed a little shorter, "The Cost of Living" was a very good read in my opinion. His books are more than just a gore fest, they seem to be an analysis of the survivor's mindset. I've read the works of many different authors in this genre. I've came across few that can compare to David Moody. If you are looking for a good twist on zombies or if you are looking for something that goes beyond repetitive gory descriptions of zombie attacks, then check out "The Cost of Living" along with his "Autumn" series.

3.0 out of 5 stars I was left shaking my head and was extremely sad! 22 February 2015
By Danny Arnold - Published on Amazon.com

When I read The Cost of Living, I expected all the blood and gore but I also wanted a finish to the story that gave hope for humanity. That even though we as human beings have caused our own demise somehow fought, killed, and crawled through some crazy stuff and in the end we start over again. This story does not end that way and I was very disappointed. I was left shaking my head and was extremely sad that Mr. Moody (author) couldn’t give that last bit hope. I would not recommend this book to my fellow zombie story readers who share my vision of a well written apocalyptic story. Sorry Mr. Moody!

3.0 out of 5 stars A zombie tale with a lesson 18 November 2016
By mkittysamom - Published on Amazon.com

It almost seems like one of Aesop's Fables! It was a sad story but a true one. One that addresses what can really happen when the whole world shuts down. A virus..spread by mucus, sneezes, spitting..is pretty hard to avoid. Worse than trying to avoid a zombie bite. A diabolical pathogen is really scary!
