Newly engaged, Dr. Emily Hartford has nearly completed her medical studies when she learns her father has had a heart attack and has to return home. Her father has been the local coroner for years and she has many happy memories of her earlier years accompanying him on his call outs.
Although engaged to a doctor from a well to do family Nick is her first love. Now the town sheriff, he has never stopped loving her.
When a young rising equestrian star is murdered Emily steps in to help using her medical skills to uncover the murderer. In doing so emotions surface which never really went away as well as an unresolved issue from the past.
The author is the daughter of a real medical examiner drawing on personal experience and memories to write this book. The ending left me wanting to know more and eager for a sequel.
This book has a little romance, mystery, crime and a hard to pick villain (the last person I thought of). My favourite parts included details on the coroner/autopsy/medical side of things.
Emily was my favourite character. She had a lot of personality traits I admire.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a free digital copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Suspenseful, Well-written, A Very Good Read
Reviewed in the United States on 10 August 2018Verified Purchase
Okay, I may be a bit prejudiced about this book because the author Jennifer Graeser Dornbush is my daughter, but then again maybe not. If you want a suspenseful, can't put the book down read, then you are going to love this story. Jennifer has a way of keeping you in suspense about what is going to come next. She also has a way of providing you with little clues along the way so that you think you have it all figured out "who done it" to suddenly turn the tables on you so you find out that it was someone you never thought could have "done it". Add a little romance, add some terrifying moments, add some really good story writing skills, and what you have is a fantastic book that you can't put down until you just have to find out how it ends, only to be left hanging because the second book to this series has not yet come out to actually know how it is all going to turn out. Stay tuned and watch for the sequel to The Coroner coming sometime soon. Good job Jennifer! You know I love your writing.

This should be filed under Cozy Mysteries
Reviewed in the United States on 29 March 2019Verified Purchase
Because it was NOT filed under Cozy Mysteries, I thought I was going to get a real, live who-done-it. Maybe with a smart but troubled detective. Some fun twists, perhaps. Nope. None of that. A young equestrian is found dead. The local medical examiner had a heart attack so, naturally, his estranged daughter who happens to be a surgeon shows up and takes over the ME job for her dad! But wait, her former love interest is now the town's sheriff. But wait, she's got a lame surgeon boyfriend with a meddling mother from hell who is planning the entire wedding for the couple [who we already can guess are going to split up real, real soon]. And that's the love triangle! Since there's only one murder, I guess the author had to figure out how to up the ante with action. Thus, we are entertained with horse abuse. There is a short lesson in the evil way about how to get horses to perform in dressage....I didn't need to know this nor do I care...but when a writer runs out of plot, I guess it's any port in the storm.
I kept with this book because I wanted to see how easily the female protagonist gives up her medical career in Chicago to settle with the sheriff and a small town medical examiner practice. So easy.
Not so easy to digest is the weird thing with her mother's death 15 years prior. And why she fled her small town, her father, the love interest, etc. And why her father didn't investigate his own wife's death. This is not explained well nor does it add much to the story. In fact, the whole thing hangs like a bag of moldy laundry all over this story. It doesn't smell right and you can't get rid of it. If anybody can explain the ending, you have my admiration.

Page-turner!

Warning!! Once you start reading The Coroner you will not want to put it down! I let everything slide so I could see how it ended. Dornbush's characters from Nick and Emily to her father and his new wife are well-drawn. The mystery kept me guessing until the very end. Dornbush is so knowledgeable when it comes to investigations and she writes with authority. Besides the mystery, there are relationships that have to be sorted out, and not just the love interest. If you enjoy a good mystery and suspense along with romance thrown in, you'll enjoy The Coroner.

Excellent story! Fantastic characters! Buy this book!

Back after many years in the small town she grew up in, Emily must come to grips with her past and the present that is unfolding before her eyes. In an effort to help her ill father, who is the local coroner, she performs an autopsy and the results of the autopsy draw her further into a local mystery. She must also delve into her relationships with her fiancé, her ex-boyfriend, her childhood best friend and her estranged father. As Emily seeks to solve the mystery, she learns more and more about herself! From the minute I started reading this book, I didn’t want to put it down. Buy it! You won’t be disappointed!
