This is a fun road trip story with likeable lead characters. It does not have quite as much emotional grip as other road trip romances from this author (Friday’s Child, Devil’s Cub), but its very entertaining all the same. And sweet.
On the verge of making a dreadful marriage, Sir Richard accidentally meets Penelope, an heiress on the run from greedy relatives. Between them they hatch a plot aided by Richard’s drunkenness and Penelope’s reckless youth, and end up on a public stage coach disguised as a tutor and pupil ‘Pen’. The rest of the story involves a diamond thief, various colourful travellers and relatives pursuing the couple.
The story is just fine, but its the main couple that give this book its charm. They have so much fun with each other and their journey. Sir Richard, known for his coldness and fashion sense, is highly entertained by the mad adventure and his fake pupil/nephew/cousin Pen. He relishes her tall tales and the ridiculous situations they encounter. You sense that Richard has never actually lived until he meets Pen. Pen herself is sweet and funny, quite naive but fearless and very loveable. She is also brutally frank and this makes for some of the funniest lines in this witty warm romance. Do read it.

Absolutely adored this novel. Loved the characters, the humour, the authenticity of the period. A more detailed plot than most historical romances, in fact there was very little romance. Good, clean fun.

This was the first book I read by Georgette Heyer and it set me on the road to a lifelong love of her books. Sir Richard Wyndham is being pressured into marriage with someone he has known since childhood. He doesn't like the thought of the marriage but lacks the incentive to refuse to comply with his family's wishes.
On the night before he is to propose he is walking back to his house slightly the worse for wear when he says what he thinks is a young man climbing out of a window. He stops the runaway falling and realises it is a young woman. Together they decide to run away with Penelope Creed disguised as Sir Richard's nephew. Their adventures make entertaining and amusing reading.
This is perhaps one of the most light-hearted and engaging of Heyer's Regency romances even though it does include stolen jewels and a murder. The dialogue sparkles and the situations the runaways find themselves in are at times hilarious as well as dangerous. If you want to try Georgette Heyer for the first time then this would be a good place to start. The heroine is resourceful and engaging and the hero intelligent and not above laughing at himself. I recommend it if you want something light-hearted with an historical background

A pleasant, satisfying bedtime read

I enjoyed this book even more than I enjoyed it as a teenager thousands of years ago. Heyer creates believable characters and it doesn't matter that the story line is implausible as the book is written in such a style that we are carried along with it and the Regency period well portrayed. Baddies get their just desserts and the goodies likewise. Though one knows the romantic outcome as soon as the characters are introduced it doesn't matter. Propriety is maintained throughout though the heroine is great fun and very naughty by the dictates of the day. The male 'lead' has a great sense of humour and is thoroughly likeable. The writing style is very correct but not stilted and has survived very well into the 21st. century.

'The Talisman Ring' and some other good novels by Heyer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 February 2016Verified Purchase
By comparison to 'The Grand Sophy', 'A Marriage of Convenience', 'The Talisman Ring' and some other good novels by Heyer, I have found 'The Corinthian' rather poorly written. The feminine main character, Pen, is rather annoying in her oscillation between pangs of romanticism and sheer stupidity. One doesn't understand in the least why the main masculine character, Sir Richard, twelve years Pen's senior, a dandy accomplished in many arts, should fall in love with a rather stupid 17 year old. In other words, the motivation of the characters is not properly rendered by the author. The plot and sub-plot are also hard to believe.

A lovely read for the romantically inclined!

A slim volume but up to Georgette Heyer's usual standard. Set in Regency England, featuring a murder, some detection, a young runaway girl and a handsome and humourous hero.

I grew up on Georgette Heyer and this is one of her better books with nice characters, humour and a fun storyline.
