Another great sailing yarn by AR. Coot Club deserves to be read by anyone with even the slightest interest in cruising under sail. The story sweeps you up like a stiff current & refuses to let you go.

Great story but can it compete with smartphone?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2017Verified Purchase
After reading this book I HAD to visit Norfolk and sail a yacht. And I did -62 years ago. I went with a school party but I was one of the few to fully apreciate the journey because we sailed past all the places mentioned in the story. My shipmates did not even notice the black sheep on the lawn of Horning Vicarage or recognise the stump of a windmill as being built in the ruins of St Benets Abbey. The mysteries of sailing in narrow waters and knowing how to avoid running aground , tricks for getting through Potter Heigham bride were all things I had learned from this book. And the knowledge was not appreciated by my older shipmates who had not read it. Every mile of river or lake was the place where events in the story had happened. thus enhancing my enjoyment of the voyage.
But OH DEAR, my grandchildren could not be bothered to try to read the book. When I tried to encourage to read it they would look up briefly from their smartphones and then be lost again. Even the books they HAD been persuaded to read seem to me to very thin on real content and certainly would not provide the wide ranging 'education' provided by Arthur Ransome.

Coot Club for ever!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2017Verified Purchase
I had not read "Coot Club" for about 65 years but it is of course just as I remember it. The magical Norfolk Broads, Arthur Ransome's encyclopeadic knowledge of boats, fishing, bird watching and his hatred of egg collectors are all there. If he were alive today he would make his mark quite possibly as a Green MP! The large cast of children is finely drawn, each individual being clearly differentiated. Of course I'm nostalgic but it is still a gripping read.for old and young.

Arthur Ransome writes so well for children - it would seem - of ALL ages... I thoroughly enjoyed reading it again after so many years. I can recommend it to all budding adults and sailors!

This is my favourite Ransome story. I live in Norfolk and have lived near Beccles. The Broads are magical and still much as described in the book. As I read I can visualise the places. The story is as enjoyable now as it was 50 years ago when I first read it.Thank you Arthur Ransome.

This book was delivered on time in good condition. Thank you. The series of books by Arthur Ransome is excellent. It's a pity many of todays youngsters do not have the same freedom and space to have adventures.
