I like to read books by Robert Dugoni. They are fast paced and full of twists and turns. The courtroom scenes are well played and not boring. Okay this is not a Grisham but it's obvious that the author does his home work. The locations are realistic and the characters well described. The scenarios are sometimes a little too fictional and yes there are some gaps or too coincidental happenings. But start reading and you won't be disappointed.
In this book Sloane is still in mourning for his murdered wife. His son Jake is in trouble and is entrusted to Sloane to rehabilitate. Together with friend Tom Molia and his son TJ they travel to the wilds of northern California. Jake drags TJ into a whole mess of trouble and in the sphere of Judge Earl Boykin who is the local law. Tom and David are powerless to prevent the boys being sent away and also suffer some "justice" at the hands of the local private police. A lot of investigation reveals why this is a town in fear.
The story follows both Jake who has to grow up and the investigations legal battles of David. Who is a supporter and who has something to hide or fear? Both men and their sons are exposed to danger and take steps outside the law. The story moves along quickly and the reader is kept interested. In the end we come back to the law to deliver the coup de grace.
I have read (but not necessarily enjoyed) lots of similar books and Robert Dugoni never disappoints. If you haven't read him before and you like well researched and written fast paced thrillers incorporating some policing and courtroom you will probably buy more.
