This book, though, isn't my favourite of hers. At one point I actually got a bit bored and put it down, though did return a little later to finish it.
Maybe it's because this is a ménage book which isn't my favourite thing, but the issue I had was that the two main characters (as I pictured them) were quite well developed, but the third wheel - so to speak - was two dimensional and felt more like a plot device than a person. So when the book got into the ménage scenes with Andy (third wheel), I just didn't engage with them and that's the point I got bored. Hence the docking of a star.
I loved Gabe though. Much more my kind of person. And Charlotte Stein writes beta heroes so well, which is probably why I love her books.
I picked it up to reread the other day, though, and enjoyed it immensely. The characters are sweet and likeable, their humour is wonderful, the narrator's really funny. I giggled along with her worries and jokes.
I really love the wish-fulfillment erotica book shop she owns, I WANT ONE TOO, it's perfect. I love the status she places on erotic romance, and the idea of the world full of people reading their dirty books with furtive, or not so furtive joy. It's a smutopia :)
I like how sex is centred as an important thing in 'Control'. It's as very liberating view, even as the heroine worries about her desires.
SO: I think this is a warning to reviewers. I didn't review this before because it left me a bit luke-warm, but at a later time and on a second read, I love it, I really enjoyed reading it. Heartily recommend it!
I don't think I've ever read anything quite like this before, I believe this book will stay with me for some time...
Control is an exploration of dominance and submission totally without any of the usual cliches or stereotypes. It's pure, tweed-clad joy in giving in to your fantasies. Madison is looking for an assistant for her erotica bookshop. The dirty-talking, order-giving Andy is not suitable, although his interview at the kitchen table proves interesting. Quiet, repressed Gabe, who is secretly a seething mess of kinky desires, gets the job. And Madison sets about finding out what makes him tick. Which is mostly being ordered to do things he's ashamed of.
Believe it or not, it's well written too and the author is no doubt capable of writing in other genres. However, she's certainly talented in writing smut, so if you're looking for some no-nonsense titillation, that's not pretending to be something more deep and meaningful, take a look at this and see how long you can stay in control!
