She offered him more than he was expecting.
Can he give her all that she needs?

Widower and now a single father of four, Matt Pendleton is all work and no play. Between being a hotshot detective and caring for his children, there leaves little time for fun. Desperate for some passion and connection, Matt hires an escort for the night.

But one night turns into much more.

Emily Coulter is beautiful, charismatic, and fiercely independent - determined to make her own way in the world. Blindsided by their attraction for one another, neither can resist their intense desire. But Emily's past with a vicious Dom contradicts Matt's present as a cop and a dad. Can two people with contrasting lives discover a way to merge their different lives into one?

Ms Dempster takes you straight into the story with Matt Pendleton entering the hotel room. When Emily walks in he can’t believe the attraction he feels for her and everything starts happening differently to how he thought it would. This was supposed to be just two adults enjoying consensual sex but it ended up more than that. Trying to juggle single father hood to four children and deciding whether to have a relationship with Emily is not an easy decision to make. I picked up this book to read and the next thing I know it’s 3.30am, the story had me in its grasp and putting the book down was not an option. I understood Courtney’s anguish after her mother’s death and how everything affected her, one part of me was not amused as I really wanted things to work out between Matt and Emily the other part understood how Courtney felt as a 15 year old child, still coming to terms over her mother’s death and not wanting her father to move on with another woman. When Matt would not let Emily explain what she was doing with Henry I realised it was the excuse he needed to justify not having a relationship with her. Time progressed and just as Matt was starting to forge a better relationship with his children the kidnapping occurred. Although his friendship with Paul had been strained a few months previously, Matt knew he needed his help if they were to find the person kidnapped. Through trials and tribulations the kidnapper is located but the damage to the victim was tremendous. A lot was at stake if Mark was to prove how he felt for Emily and to keep his family together. Ms Dempster did a fantastic story keeping you gripped with each line she wrote, right up to the end you have no idea how things would end.

With more heart and soul than Fifty Shades, I couldn't give this gorgeous book less than 5 stars. Reading an erotic style romance was not something that intetested me, until Contrasting Lives came highly recommemded. After the first page, I couldn't put it down. Matt's character was 3D and absolutely drew me in. Emily, with her heartfelt backstory, really held my attention. I just couldn't put it down - finished in one day and left wanting more. Thank you for this amazing debut novel, Leah Dempster, I hope to read more of your work.

HASH(0xbb23d6d8) out of 5 stars This book has a little bit of everything! 13 May 2015

Format: Kindle Edition
This is the story of Matt Pendleton, police detective, widower and father to four children. He's already got a lot on his plate but his whole life is about to turn upside down when he meets Emily.
She's a woman with good intentions but a dark past and some baggage of her own.

This is a great story with lots of depth to the plot. I really enjoyed all the challenges the two main characters faced in their quest to be together. The difficulties they faced helped us delve a little deeper into their lives.

The dual POV worked well, showing us how the characters behaved when they weren't together and ultimately added more layers to them.

There's a whole entourage of lovable characters and plenty of endearing scenes with Matt and his children.

This book has a little bit of everything; romance, sex, drama and a hint of thriller. Highly recommended!

HASH(0xbb0cb2b8) out of 5 stars More suspenseful than titillating 22 January 2016

Even with the many steamy scenes, Contrasting Lives by Leah Dempster is more suspenseful than titillating. The riveting storyline unfolds from two points of view. Matt Pendleton, a widower with four children, meets Emily Coulter, an escort with a dark past. Sparks fly from the get-go, but each must come to terms with personal demons before they can develop a mutual trust. Many things happen that test the budding relationship.

Emily is a sub who likes to be dominated sexually. Can Matt become the person she can submit to? This is the first book I've read about BDSM, a "variety of erotic practices or roleplaying involving bondage, dominance and submission, sadomasochism." The author successfully demonstrates the interpersonal dynamics involved in this form of sexual expression. Without becoming pedantic, Ms. Dempster stresses the importance of respect and demonstrates how out-of-hand BDSM can get.

The characters are multidimensional. As a result, there are many subplots that need resolution, which makes the story interesting. Whether you root for Matt or Emily, you will keep the pages turning to see the outcome.

If you enjoy reading thrilling steamy romances with likable characters, I recommend Contrasting Lives by Leah Dempster.

HASH(0xbb0e342c) out of 5 stars INVOLVING, HOT AND ENGAGING! 13 May 2015
By BookLover70 - Published on Amazon.com

I always know a book is good when I have to struggle for hours afterwards just to know what to say in a review. It's almost like I didn't want it to end so I put off the inevitable ending - a review. And this describes Contrasting Lives perfectly. There was a complete, involving story; amazing hot, sexy scenes; and characters that were complex and engaging. You really couldn't ask for more in a novel. I am still thinking about Matt and Emily and the kids and what the future might hold for them. I hope this amazing author gives us plenty more wonderful stories in the future.

HASH(0xbb0e3b7c) out of 5 stars First off - I really liked Emily. At 25 years old she knew herself ... 22 July 2016

I'm going to be in the less than 5 stars minority here...First off - I really liked Emily. At 25 years old she knew herself and what she wanted and was honest about it.

*****************SPOILERS***************************

Emily is an escort/submissive who works in an upscale BDSM club and Matt is becomes one of her clients. He's a 42 year old widower with 4 kids who hasn't been with anyone since his wife passed 18 months ago. They meet and it's almost insta-love - which I don't mind, nor do I mind the age difference between the two. What gets me is Matt - in my opinion - he's an immature d!c$head. Even his partner (Matt's a detective) called him out on his BS attitude toward Emily. This same partner believed that Matt was an undiscovered Dominant and tried to bring him into the life because he's perfect match for Emily's sub tendencies. There was a really disturbing scene that involved Emily's abusive former Dom which Matt and his kids had to witness. This I felt was totally unnecessary and pretty much ruined the book for me.

**********************END SPOILERS*****************************

I love a good BDSM story. I love guys who are alpha strong yet gentle. Matt was neither of these. I found it hard to believe he was as old as he was since he acted like he was 14 with his first hard on. This book would have been really good if the love interest was not such a wuss.
