Not only is it seriously a creepy read, but the atmosphere is incredible. From the first chapter, you can really immerse yourself in the story and be carried away with the plot. This is probably because, along with other Erin Bowman's books, the writing is fantastic. She's an author that I will automatically buy from; I don't even need to read the blurb of her next release to add it to my shopping cart and know I'll absolutely love it.
There are so many different catalysts coming together to create this perfect storm of dread and suspense, whether it’s the infection itself, the people who already are infected, the storms on the planet they’re trapped on, malfunctioning equipment, or even just the fear that comes with not knowing who on their team they can or can’t trust—the distress rolling off of these characters is downright tangible, and you can’t help but fall right into that fear alongside them.
I really enjoyed the fact that this book is told in alternating point-of-views, so we get little glimpses here and there of different characters' motivations and thoughts. Everything is told in third-person, which I thought was a good choice for this book, since it made the chapters flow smoothly.
I never once found myself bored reading this book, and now I'm very excited for the next installment! If you are a fan of science fiction, horror, and thrillers, I'd definitely recommend this novel for a wild ride! Physical book arrived on time, in new condition.
This was the second time I've read this book and for this re-read I listened to the audiobook. I have to say that I still love it just as much as when I first met the crew of the Odyssey and journeyed to Achlys. It was similar to watching a really good movie for the second time and noticing bits and pieces you missed or thought were trivial the first time around.
This book still gives me Aliens meets The Thing vibes and I love it! It was slightly slow in the beginning getting to know all the characters and the three POV. Once the crew landed on the planet, the pace picked up and the overall feel of the book got a little creepy. So far as POV, I never felt confused by which character or POV was speaking. There was always a chapter heading to let me know which character I was reading about at the time.
There were certain characters I didn't particularly like, but they were the unlikable characters that always made bad decisions. The characters you're not really supposed to like in the story so this was fine. Also, the unlikable characters were not the POV characters. I really liked all the POV characters and although two were slightly similar, the personalities were different enough that I could pick them out when they spoke or thought.
The story and atmosphere in this book were both so good! The atmosphere is eerie and basically screams don't read this book in the dark! By the end of the book, I felt like I was in movie. Be forewarned though! The story ends on a cliffhanger making you want to read the next book then and there!
Basically, this book made me realize I need more sci-fi horror and thriller books like this in my life. I really enjoyed this creepy roller coaster of a book and the possibilities of where the story can go from here. I absolutely cannot wait for the final book in this amazing, thrilling space adventure!
There are alternating POV's and the POV's are the perfect length to keep a constant pace of the story. It only has about six POV's but like I said, it's not overwhelming keeping track of so many people.
I heard that this book was scary to read at night, I didn't find it scary enough for that. But the book definitely had me till the end.
I hate how the book ended though. And I hate that I read the book so quickly after being released. I really cannot wait for the second book. I'm nervous for it though because it can go one of two ways. There's a serious potential of it succumbing to SBS (Second Book Syndrome). I really hope it doesn't but if it does I'll just pretend book 2 doesn't exist and that book 1 is a stand-alone.
No pressure Bowman.
You will probably like this book if you also like:
Complex characters with hidden motives and multi-narrated plots
I would recommend for those who enjoy sci-fi mixed with mild horror! My only complaint would be that the POVs are never cleanly split with identifying labels, so if the character does not start out in third person name, you have to read a little bit to figure out who you're following next. A mild inconvenience but a little frustrating at times when you're flying through the book!
