I purchased this after reading the two free novellas thinking they were perhaps chapters from the beginning of the book. However, the book picks up not long after the culminating events of the second novella - highly recommend reading those first or you’ll miss out on a lot of the back story - and after certain events towards the beginning of this book, the lives of our MC are thrown into chaos, not just the love interests, but the characters surrounding them from the 499.
And while this works as just a romance suspense mystery, I was very surprised by some of the topics touched upon by the author, and as much as I want to gush about the, I don’t want to spoil anyones reading experience, but will say that I have not come across some of them in contemporary romances before.
As you can see, I loved this story. It is very character driven, and if the main mystery plot surrounding the fires had of been more front and centre instead of taking a backseat to the characters dramas, then I might have bumped this up higher in my ratings.

This is not a book I loved, this is barely even a book I liked. It's a long way from The Bourbon Kings (book one: The Bourbon Kings) quite a step from The Black Dagger Brotherhood (book one: Dark Lover). Though it is undoubtedly the same author. As much as I didn't like it Consumed feels very real. Everyone is flawed, no one is particularly lovable. I wasn't particularly picky as to whether the leading couple got together or not. He is using alcohol to cope with his trauma, she is running from her past and lying to herself. I did like some of the support cast but it's clear they were hiding some serious demons. That said Danny's relationship with his housemates was endearing. And Jack lit up the pages for me, a SWAT officer. Best bet in a later story he'll end up with a female firey. And Dr McAuliffe was a smart character. Her quote about PhD's and bullshit was brilliant and will resonate with many.
The writing in Consumed is slightly off-putting though fitting. The protagonists and virtually all the supporting characters are true blue collar workers. Its crass and can be insulting to a multitude of people. Within 60 pages Anne, the female protagonist and narrator, has been buried by the rubble of fire, had her cut off, watched her lover get buried alive saving her and basically drawn a line in the sand between herself and her family. The primary story follows the aftermath of this fire, picking up some 10 months later. By this point, Anne has her life at a point where she is happy. Her former lover Danny, not so much he's sleeping and drinking his way through the city. They are bought back together by the fire that tore them apart and her tenacity for answers.
This is a book that despite being romance, and likely to be pigeonholed as such aims to educate. It has a message to deliver about minorities depression and acceptance. J.R. Ward does minorities well, not ethnic minorities, not her bag, her target is disabilities. You forget Anne is has a prosthetic or that John Matthew (his book is Lover Mine) is mute. Her writing is a gift it allows for people who rarely get that mirror to see themselves.
Consumed is not for the faint of heart it is bloody, violent and dark. But likely JR Ward fans will get something out of it. it's book one in a series which I would guess is going to be written more like BDB than BK. You can read then stand alone but it really makes more sense if you don't. Will I read book two? We'll see. It depends who the protagonists are and what we're doing with them this just doesn't appeal to me like the family drama of BK did. Long story short it's not for everyone but if you like slightly confronting stories about real broken people finding their way in the dark it's worth a read.

As a long time fan of all of JR Ward’s works I was hanging out for another book. At the same time I was hesitant about a whole new series to be set around a profession that is also a way of life. I need not have worried though, her writing style is still so tight and on point and she’s obviously done some great research. You always feel like you’re a part of their world getting a personal taste of the characters lifestyle even when it’s something you have no experience with. Loved it

Loved this book from start to finish. Realistically told the the eyes of the firefighters. The end twist was totally unexpected and leaves you waiting impatiently for the next instalment. Hooked again by J R Ward.

Really Good Firefighter Romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 September 2019Verified Purchase
This book was about the relationship between two firefighters, and the relationships that surround them. Anne is the daughter and sister of a firefighter. Her father died in the line of duty when she was a teenager and her brother is in charge of all the firefighters in the city. Anne couldn’t imagine ever being anything else.
Danny has no family left both his parents and his twin brother are deceased. His brother was also killed in the line of duty as a firefighter.
Anne and Danny have worked together for several years and had a one night stand at a friend’s wedding, but they have never discussed it since. Then during a big fire, they are both injured very badly, both blaming themselves for the other’s injuries and they avoid each other for months.
Anne is unable to return to the job she loves, so she retrains as a Fire Investigator. This leads Anne into a big investigation that uncovers a lot of connections with big names in the city, which brings danger calling.
I really enjoyed this book. There was a lot of really interesting content about the life of firefighters and especially the physical and mental toll it can take on both them and their loved ones. There is a lot about Anne’s relationship with her mother and her brother, neither relationship is particularly positive and there is lot about why that is.
Anne is a really independent and strong woman. I like that she has emotional issues, and though she’s not really had any professional support she has worked her way through a lot of them by herself.
Danny was a bit of a mess emotionally. He drank too much, smoked and slept around. Through it all, he cared about Anne and was unhappy they weren’t together. He didn’t have any family left, so he made the guys at his station his family. He was also still good friends with guys from college. He was flawed, but he was a good guy and he supported Anne in her chosen job(s). He has a temper, but he’s not an alpha male who is always in full on ‘protect his woman’ mode.
I liked that though this was a romance, it was only a part of the book. There was a big chunk of the book about how they felt about themselves as well as each other. There was also the content about the investigation.
I felt that the investigation was the one area that let the book down. There were several leaps of intuition that could sort of be explained logically, but not fully. The investigation also seemed to fizzle out towards the end, and did not get completely resolved to my satisfaction. It may be that this is the first in a series, which, given the (Firefighters) tag in the name of the book, is probable. If this is the case then maybe future books deal with the ramifications of this element of the investigation.
I really hope there are other books in the series, because so many of the supporting characters are really interesting, and I would really enjoy reading about them as main characters.
All in all this was a well thought out and entertaining read, that makes you think a bit, but not too much.

very boring
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 October 2018Verified Purchase
the story starts off fine but then tapers off and becomes very boring where the main characters rarely connect or talk to eachother it is mostly the author describing the background and inner dialogue for pages and pages of each chapter. the story was boring as were the characters and the love scenes were unemotional, the only part i found emotional was when anne made up with her mother. near the end of the story when anne figured out the who the arson was is
the second exciting part of the whole book but it didnt redeem the book in my eyes.
i have read all the black dagger brotherhood books and ive loved them all but im really disapointed with this book and i doubt i will buy the next installment.

Hawt Damn!
JR Ward is my hero, I don’t hide the fact, She writes the best Vamps known and well... her mortals are just as epic!
As always with the Warden, there’s certain things you don’t see coming and boy I didn’t see two of these!
Epically written, Anne & Danny stole the page from the moment they graced it.
Tragedy, self loathing, self discovery, healing old wounds, finding who you are to finding love.
I devoured this in a day, I didn’t sleep, I didn’t eat, I couldn’t put it down, although I got a few weird stares around the pool at my “Nooooooo” moments!
Not giving anything way, READ IT, LOVE IT but the scene is set for all the guys of the station to tell their own tale.

I like J R Ward but not this so much.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 February 2019Verified Purchase
I really like J R Ward and this is a well written book. But I had problems understanding or liking the main characters and this was probably due to the fact that not one of them was normal and all badly flawed. Is the fire service staffed by so many men with problems. This meant that I had no warmth for the lead characters and even wondering if the leading man (no spoilers) would even survive in the future. The book ends at the end of the story rather than the end of the characters. To be more worried about the dog than anyone else is a worrying aspect for me. But it's a well written story and reasonably absorbing.

In love!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 July 2020Verified Purchase
Oh my God this was amazing! Personally I think Ward wanted to give me a heart attack because....yikes! I can barely form the words.
Anne's injury I never saw coming and as for Danny...for a solo second I honestly stopped breathing. From there it was all about mending those invisible wounds and even growing to be better.
Emilio...God! Though kind of randomly thrown in to be honest, it was still a shock and a story I'd like to see the outcome of.
Deandra was a nasty creation. Vicious and cruel. She didn't care about anyone else and as for Moose...never saw that coming!!
I love how the book touches on the fact first responders deal with a brutal amount of mental strain. I love how Ward showed some of the crutches that can occur and showed though the crutch needs to change, it isn't a failure. We're only human at the end of the day.
Definitely hope to see more books xx
