The Connector's Way takes you back to basics: the importance of listening, of reaching out one-to-one, of demonstrating genuine care for the people you work with - clients AND colleagues, of investing time in building genuine rapport and good will.
As fascinating as the book was how I found it. No one told me about it; I stumbled on it online. A client who'd hired me to keynote their sales kick-off meeting asked for recommendations on a good title about networking and referral building, one they could distribute to the 300 people who'd be attending. I know of and have read many such books but none felt like they fit the bill for this firm's situation. So I turned to Amazon.
I didn't know the author, Patrick, and had never heard of the book, but up it popped in a search on networking and referrals. I downloaded it to my Kindle, read it in a little over an hour, and quickly told the client it seemed like a perfect complement to the session I'd be giving on referral building in a digital age.
They agreed, purchased signed copies, and handed those out to each franchise owner and sales person who made the trip - 350+ folks in all, from across the country. My contact thanked me as did several of the meeting attendees, including one top agency owner who told me afterwards he had tears in his eyes when he finished the book.
There is nothing earth-shattering, no new revelations, in The Connector's Way. You've probably heard or been given much of its advice along the way. What makes it exceptional is the disarming way in which it weaves the golden rule principles it's based on into an engaging, compelling narrative that has you saying all along the way, "Yes, that's me; that's my business. I can do those things, and I need to start doing them today."
Hats off to Patrick Galvin for penning a rare piece: an actionable business parable that's fun to read and motivating.
Side note, I sent the author a thank you note after reading the book and told him what an amazing impact the book had. He sent me an email last night thanking me. As I expected, he practices what he preaches.
Before I was done, I though of several people I thought would enjoy "The Connectors Way". I had originally thought I would just buy several copies and give them away, but I had a better idea. I went to one of these friends and gave them my copy of the book. I wrote on the inside cover, my name and the date I finished the book. Then I asked him to write his name and the date a week from now. I told hime that I would be by to pick it up and if he read it and liked as much as I did, I would give him a brand new copy to do the same thing with. I bought 10 more copies of the book and plan to repeat this process with at least 10 more people that I think would not only enjoy the book but more importantly, it would possibly help them make a significant change in their lives.
Business case, this book illustrates basic business principles that are often lost in the hubbub. The book conveys the power of building relationships within both net new business opportunities as well as expanding on existing opportunities.
The book also communicates the importance of building a healthy network and how to use it.
