The idea was good but the story was too drawn out and I started to get bored with all the constant sex descriptions which slowed the pace of the story.
It seemed that the whole purpose was to drag it out and so the cliffhanger that was really rushed at the end was just to get you to buy another instalment. It was so rushed, it didn’t ring true and was completely unbelievable!!

Complicate Me by Claire Raye
Hawthorn Hills Duet #1
Complicate Me will be Released on the 08/07/2020!
“I prefer the bar”, I shoot back. “It’s a controlled environment. This is like date rape central.”
Road Trip anyway? Because I’m definitely in. This book is about two childhood friends having to travelling home, but alone the way the lines of friendship begin to blur. But sometimes the simplest things can be the most complicated.
Reid has always been close with the Parker twins, Caleb and Sienna. They have been the three musketeers who have been there for each other growing up no matter what happened. Now even though Reid and Sienna are off at College, Caleb is still his best friend and he will do anything for him. Even if that might annoy Sienna.
Sienna is just trying to live her life now she’s finally away from home, then Reid drops a bomb on her she didn’t expect would effect her. Now the only thing left for then to do is road time back home so all three of them can figure this out together.
This book is amazing, but the cliffhanger is real. I’m just glad we only have to wait a couple of weeks for part 2. Bring it on!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Complicate Me and for that I’m very grateful.

I REALLY enjoyed this book!
Sienna and Reid have been friends since early childhood. After heading to college together and leaving Sienna's twin brother behind to deal with their alcoholic father, Reid promises to look out for Sienna and keep her out of trouble (aka be the ultimate cock blocker), which results in Reid and Sienna being more so enemies than friends.
Gahhhh there is sooooo much sexual tension and chemistry between them. It was almost too much at times! This book had me practically begging for them to just get over stubbornness and get together. Reid sees it as a betrayal for wanting his best friends sister and Sienna has never wanted to act on her feelings as she never believed that Reid could feel the same.
"Are you hungry? Can I get you something to eat?" I ask him.
"Yeah, come over her and sit on my face" he says letting out a rowdy laugh..
Seriously?!?! That has to be one of my favourite lines of this book haha I just love Reid so much!!! He knows how to make a girl swoooooooooooon. Lets face it. The guys is HOT AF! And the the fact that he cares so much for Sienna just makes him even hotter.
I have to admit, that ending... I am unsure how Sienna came to that conclusion so quickly. I don’t know if I missed something buuuut I feel like that last little bit needed a bit more to it. Hell of a cliffy though. I actually felt the hurt! They are two people who belong together!

Claire Raye is a new to me author and I absolutely enjoyed the first book in this duet.
.
These childhood best friends turned enemies to lovers then complicated friends navigate their emotions towards each other, their history and relationships to each other and siennas brother, Reid’s best friend, in this epic love story with no shortage of drama, a road trip that sees them entering that added complication of something more than friendships and a hell of a twist that will have you gasping in shock.
.
This story is angsty, heart stopping, fun and has a chemistry that sizzles and jumps from the pages. You can’t help but be drawn in and captivated by this story. Beautifully written, amazing characters, and an adventure for sure!
.
I cannot wait for book 2. This duet is everything!

Complicate Me is book one in the first Hawthorn Hills Duet. This book can NOT be read as a standalone and ends on a cliff hanger.
Complicate Me follows Reid & Sienna in a new adult, brother's best friend, epic road trip romance. Its got angst, drama, emotion but its also incredibly sweet, fun & flirty and has enough 90's grunge/punk music references to keep my 90's loving heart happy. I may or may not still have Alanis Morissettes 'Head Over Feet' stuck in my head. This book had such a great feel and aesthetic to it.
Sienna had always envisioned going away to college with her brother Caleb and their best friend Reid having all bonded at a young age through destructive and toxic childhoods growing up. She never expected for Caleb to stay behind to deal with family matters. 2 years into her college experience she still feels guilt over Caleb being left behind as well as dealing with a changed Reid who tends to be more of a nuisance than the boy she grew up secretly wanting, then one day she gets news that requires her to reluctantly return home which Reid volunteers to escort her, que the epic road trip. A few days on the road to a place she never thought she would return to with a boy who drives her crazy yet she can't stay away from. What could possibly happen.
Sienna is such a feisty, funny, bold and sassy girl and I absolutely loved her. She didn't have the best childhood growing up but she is definitely a fighter and stronger because of it she even if she doesn't always see it.
Reid is a bit of a playboy and doesn't feel like he is a good enough guy for Sienna but he is also very sweet, caring, empathetic and very protective of her even if that means protecting her from him. I wanted to throttle him a lot in the beginning and tell him to kindly wake up so getting to see his progression was my favourite part of the story.
Their story had a lot of ups and downs, some very frustrating moments, some compassionate moments and I loved watching how these two broken yet beautiful souls understood each other and were constantly drawn to each other even when trying to avoid their chemistry and connection.
I did slowly and correctly figure out how this story might end. Certain circumstances and situations that I just new would be involved but I still loved how it played out and can not wait to see how their story concludes and how the set up for the 2nd couple (just seeing their book titles listed had me all giddy) in the series comes about because I'm just sitting here going GIVE ME ALL THE STORIES NOW please and thank you.

Why is a 40 year old man on the cover when this story is about two 20 year olds?!? 🤣🤣🤣
Decent story, well written and kept me interested until the end which is always a huge plus.

Whilst it is good to give a history on the characters this was way too much. I've been to 50% of the book and it is still dragging. I think the author over stretched this story.

Too slow and then it completely lost me at the end
Reviewed in the United States on 9 November 2020Verified Purchase
I found myself skipping pages throughout the book because the pace of the story was too slow for my liking. When I neared the end of this book I thought something would happen to convince me to read the next book, but there just wasn't.
I completely disconnected from the characters and their decisions and found that I couldn't care less about what happened to them in the second half of the story.

Angsty slow burn with a fun roadtrip and
Reviewed in the United States on 8 July 2020Verified Purchase
In Complicate Me, the first book in the Hawthorn Hills duet, Claire Raye has perfected the kind of slow burn chemistry that you only find in NA romance— full of nervous butterflies, sexy heat, and giddy excitement. Add that with the fun and unique road trip plot line, and you’ve got a banger of book. I loved watching Reid and Sienna‘s love story unfold, and I desperately need the conclusion to this story. Reid and Sienna deserve their HEA! 4.5 stars.
Reid and Sienna have known each other since childhood, but in recent years they’ve grown apart in a BIG way. When an urgent cross country road trip throws them together, though, they reconnect, and with each mile traveled they grow closer, intimacy increases, and the smoldering sparks turn into a full blown blaze of heat.
It took me a minute to connect to these characters, but when I did, WHOA BUDDY, I fell for Reid and Sienna. The road trip scenes were so much fun, and as they became more comfortable with each other I found my connection to them growing, as well. I loved how Claire Raye built up the sexual tension between Reid and Sienna with accidental touches and steamy “almost” moments. It brought me back to those first love feelings, and Sienna’s road trip playlist definitely filled me with nostalgia.
I’m so invested in these characters, and after that gut punch of a cliff hanger, I CANNOT WAIT for the conclusion to this duet. (Luckily, Claire Raye is doing a rapid release and I only have to wait two weeks!) I need Complete Me ASAP!
