The final book of the excellent Commune series, book 4 offers a satisfying conclusion but forces the reader to swallow some bitter pills. Over the course of the previous 3 books, we have come to love our rag-tag bunch of survivors as we’ve cheered their successes and mourned their losses. As the situation deteriorates, book 4 forces us to see these folk for who they are: people who will go to any lengths to ensure the survival of their community. The moral brakes are released, and the story rolls on through an increasing number of horrific situations. There are no easy choices.
Shining through the gloom however is the authors wonderful ability to capture the spoken word. From Riley’s verbal stutter (yeah?) to Clay’s gutter Shakespeare performed by a crazed Ian McShane, this book is the best written of the series but also the most difficult to read.
