Plenty of action.

In this book an uneasy peace between England, France and Spain has broken out, resulting in many naval officers being out of work. Captain Richard Bolitho is summoned to the admiralty and sent on a secret mission to the East Indies with his new ship, the frigate Undine. He is accompanied on the journey by his old friend Thomas Herrick as his first lieutenant and his coxswain John Allday. They encounter many dangers along the way. Being so far from home, Captain Bolitho is required to use his own initiative and both his diplomatic and sailing skills are needed to achieve his goal. Even in peacetime there are clashes with natives, pirates and even the French as well as a simmering love affair with the wife of a British diplomat. The book is action packed and you soon start to relate to all of the characters. I first read this book many years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed the re-read.

Another brilliant book from Alexander Kent AKA Douglas Reeman
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 December 2012Verified Purchase
The way in which Mr Kent describes the world at sea in these Bolitho books is quite amazing. You can see each incident as if you were there. Mr Kent's knowledge of the Royal Navy or as my son recently retired after 27 years in the RN, insists on calling it "the British Royal Navy, both in the Regency times and under his own name of Douglas Reeman, the Navy from the Boxer uprising in China through the two World Wars, cannot be surpassed. Vivid actions come to like and after a time you get to know the characters as if they were real and either friends or "foe". I have read all the Bolitho series in paper format and most of the Reeman's to, but that will not stop me from having them in my Kindle. If you are not a reader of Alexander Kent and like a good maritime yarn then start with any book and you will soon be hooked.

Great book shame about the misprints
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 May 2011Verified Purchase
I agree with the other reviewers. I've been a fan of the Bolitho series since I read them in book form years ago and am now renewing my acquaintance
Must say though the publishers Cornerstone Digital must be taken to task for the atrocious misprints. Don't know what happens to the digital version when Amazon format it but I would guess the original publishers are to blame for the mistakes
Spoiled the read esp. as Amazon charge the same for the e-book as I have paid for the paperback!!
Amazon need to lay down some rules about this!
Meanwhile back to the book...
Well written and exciting, as always. Bolitho is such a well rounded character and you can really feel for him and his crew as they ply the seas (oceans!)
The historic and ships chandlery details are extremely accurate and you certainly feel for the men in the ships and what they have to endure
Look forward to beginning the next installment

Different seas

Poor old Bolitho doesn't have a lot of luck with women. In fact the female characters are the one weakness of these books. They are apt to make melodramatic utterances and gestures, without ever coming to life as the men do. Happily there are few females on board the 18th century warship.

Great story, great characters, plenty of action. Just what you need to read in times like the present.
