Author does not have confidence in the heroine

The author spoils a good detective novel by not having confidence in the main protagonist to carry the story to the climax.

The plot in this novel is well done and arises from the characters involved. The author does a good job of hiding the identities of the victims and perpetrators. The murders that are committed are not clear cut:are some assisted suicides, or others the result of provocation? This ambiguity strengthens the novel.

The pacing of the novel is excellent and fits the story. The interweaving of first and third person narration adds to the tense atmosphere of the novel as we try to identify the villain.

The characterisation of the protagonist is well done, and her development does drive the plot. What she thinks and does comes from her character.

There are unnecessary characters in this novel: DCI Douglas and his brother the super-hacker. I would argue that removing them would enhance the novel. The protagonist does have enough knowledge and wherewithal to drive the plot to its climax.

Another cracking plot from Rachel Abbott. I love the way she gets right inside the heads of the victims a and you feel the despair of the main character for the dilemma she finds herself in. An elderly couple preying on vulnerable young women, suspect suicides and Becky Robinson and Tom Douglas on the case, who could ask for more. Throw in Tom's brother making an appearance and a shocking twist at the end.

The plot, with its ever present twists and turns, comes to a satisfying conclusion, as all good books should. Another winner from this clever author.

Rachel never fails to grip me with her books and this one is no exception. Right from the start I was hooked and coudn’t put it down. I love the way she draws you in with her characters so that they become totally real. The plot was exciting and horrifying in equal measure and there were so many blind alleys and I genuinely didn’t guess the real baddy until a long way in.
The ending was a complete surprise too, but a good one.
Great that Jack made an appearance again. I always enjoy the banter between the two brothers.
I’m only sad to have to wait another year until the next one .

This is the 7th DI Tom Douglas novel but would stand alone if the previous one's had not been read. His team are by his side and by now are well known to the reader. I think that this book tops the others.

A young woman is given a return ticket to Burma by her uncle before he dies, to ensure that she visits somewhere that means a lot to him. Her live-in boyfriend, Ian, wants her to stay and cash the ticket in. He would rather she had the money to top up “their account”. It makes her even more determined to go.

Before she leaves she realises that she and Ian are not getting on so asks him to move out. As expected he refuses, citing her selfishness as one of the reasons. Once she is away, he sends emails and texts about what she has done to him. He says he will start selling her things so he can have money he thinks he is entitled to. The house is hers. He has no job and lives off her. Her resolve strengthens and she continues with her trip.

She meets Thea (husband Psychiatrist Garrett) in Burma. Become good friends. Meets up with Theo when back in Manchester an goes to stay with them after an argument with Ian in her return.

She is told she sleep walks and has murdered Ian. She has to remain out of sight in their house.

All the twists and turns of this really keeps you guessing. The body of a woman turns up with no apparent cause of death. Two women living in a basement and working as skivvies. Suspected drugging, loss, and fear. An abusive relationship where the weight eventually shifts.

This is all gripping stuff and Rachel Abbott weaves her magic on another 5 star book.

An interesting idea perhaps developed from the stories of women being kept hostage in cellars. For me the plot was transparent and there were no surprises. It was clear what was happening by half way through so the second half was quite tedious. The twist at the end was a surprise but rather contrived.
I thought the book was well written and easy to read but the characters lacked depth and it would have been good to have a more complex plot.

I found the start quite slow and didn't get into the book until my 3rd sitting. After that though, I finished the book in two more sittings. Tom Douglas only features from the mid-point and is there for the finale, but generally its a story of vulnerable women being manipulated in parallel to a series of disappearances and even 'murders'. The characters are strong and the reader finds themselves willing Judith to come to her senses and escape from what she has got into. I have read all of Abbott's stories and this continues the high quality books that she writes for us.

I’ve read and enjoyed all the titles in the Tom Douglas series so had high expectations of this. Sadly, I found the story fragmented and hard to get into and was actually glad when I finished it and could move on to something else.

Rachel’s books usually grab me from the get go, but she seemed to be trying a different style this time, and I just didn’t enjoy it. I found the characters unconvincing and the plot rather contrived and downright implausible in places.

Rachel is normally so adept at weaving a great plot while continuing the story of Tom’s private life. In fact, it’s exactly this balance that makes you look forward to the next book. Here, however, Tom (and his team) seemed somehow diminished in importance, almost as if they were just along for the ride, rather than actively driving the narrative.

All in all, a disappointing and frustrating read. Sorry, Rachel, but I just can’t find anything positive to say about it.
