In Kalset, eye color determines social hierarchy and magical power. Shakka's fate is sealed when he is born with red eyes. His parents disguise him, trying to save him from that fate. The Colors of Kalset is Coffey's first published novel. Originally from New York, he and his wife now live near Durham, North Carolina. Coffey's passion for fantasy started at a young age and continues through his writing.
