When I was fourteen years old, I killed for the first time. That day I learned cruelty wasn’t only within the walls we had just escaped.
It hasn’t been easy growing up in the middle of a war. A struggle to find shelter. Fighting to protect our bodies against the corruption of the streets. Nobody cared about the street kids who had to beg and steal to eat.
Now we are the Portland Street Kings – A family forged through loyalty not blood. To get through this life of broken dreams alive, we’ve become hard, uncaring and merciless. We do what must be done to keep our family safe, we will harm those who stand against us.
We have it all, feared and respected by those on the streets. Then she collided into my world, and with her came demons from my past, back to haunt us all.

I found it hard to get into this story it took me till I was about a 1/3 of the way through before I really started to get into it I'm pleased I persevered. Each member of the king family are all tall dark and mysterious. They all are loyal and care deeply for each other. They have become each others everything. Each will do what they have to do to survive. But the more you read the more you understand each character, together they are the king family they have had a tough life and as their story unfolded you can't help but hurt for them...and admire their strengths and the length they have gone too.

Fantastic start to the series

A book that I was not able to put down! Be warned, once you start there's no putting it down. And now I've finished it the only thing to do is buy the next in the series :)
This is a spin off series from Evie's you loved me at my.... trilogy (though yet to see any references to these books, I'm guessing we will in Della's story in book 3). The first book in the series focuses on Slater, the leader of the Portland Street Kings, and what a perfect alpha male he is! Everything you'd want in a lead character and Piper is just perfect too. I kind of guessed the little secret about Piper, but it most certainly didn't ruin the story for me- all I did was keep thinking 'please be right about Piper, it would be so perfect.' And you get to feel a real connection to the other family members in the book too, so I can't wait to keep reading the series.
A gripping book, perfect HEA and so very glad each family member is getting their own book so we get more of this amazing family. Highly recommended. I'm off to read book two now.......

Good start to a series

It's a story of living off the street and making your own way, of foster parents who are not what they are supposed to be like. It's a hard story and Slater only knows one way to survive until he meets Piper and she works for the authorities, the people he distrusts. It's a build up to a series and a good read.

I loved this book it was great the story line is great it's not predictable and it keeps you guessing right up to the end. This story has a great balance of loss, determination, family, loyalty, betrayal, violence, compassion and steamy sex. I would definitely recommend this book I can't wait to read the next

Thought the story was good so were the characters and the background story was enthralling emotional however just didn't end very well it just seemed to cut off so I'm assuming there's another book to finish the story so only three stars.
