Product Description

When Mary Beth McIntire settles into a vacation house on June 2, 2017, she anticipates a quiet morning with coffee. Then she hears a noise, peers out a window, and spots a man in 1950s attire standing in the backyard. She panics when the trespasser sees her and enters the house though a door to the basement. She questions her sanity when she cannot find him.

In the same house on March 21, 1959, Mark Ryan finds a letter. Written by the mansion’s original owner in 1900, the letter describes a basement chamber, mysterious crystals, and a formula for time travel. Driven by curiosity, Mark tests the formula twice. On his second trip to 2017, he encounters a beautiful stranger. He meets the woman in the window.

Within hours, Mary Beth and Mark share their secret with her sister and his brother and begin a journey that takes them from the present day to the age of sock hops, drive-ins, and jukeboxes. In CLASS OF ’59, the fourth book in the American Journey series, four young adults find love, danger, and adventure as they navigate the corridors of time and experience Southern California in its storied prime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only do I recommend you read this book--but every one in this series. 27 April 2017

I have read every book in this series--perhaps out of order but that did not make any difference what so ever! I love time travel and this one starts when I was 9 years old--and travels to 2017. I did not grow up in the 50's but in the small town I grew up in--lets just say the 50's lasted until at least the mid 60's if not a bit more. I remember those days fondly--the juke boxes in the diners, the drive in movies--how people actually were friendly and spoke to each other--no texting back then (except those little paper messages we used to pass in class when the teacher was not looking!

These 4 time travelers go through many adventures together--some of them not so good. Marybeth's sister will make you laugh and Mark's brother--well-you won't know whether to knock him out or hug him!! The ending could have been really sad--but someone comes to save the day!!

Not only do I recommend you read this book--but every one in this series. I have also read a lot of other books in other series by this author and loved them all. There has not been a book that I have read by John A. Heldt that I have not loved!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Time Travel with a Heart 11 December 2016
By Erin Dinneen - Published on Amazon.com

Having read all the rest of John Heldt's books, I felt that this one was geared more toward young adult readers. I usually like to read these books because they give me a feeling of living in another historical era. Unfortunately, this was an error that I lived through so I didn't feel that particular feeling that I get reading his other books. Still, it was an interesting exercise in in time travel and it was fun to meet the Bell's, who are a recurring couple in every single book. Although not as complicated as his other books I did really enjoy it and would certainly recommend it to others and to book that fills in the cracks that are missing and the other books.
4.0 out of 5 stars Hig School/Colleg age young people who easily adapt to life changes no matter the different years they live in. 6 February 2017
By Jay Bee - Published on Amazon.com

John Heldt has changed the age of the subject characters in this book. Mark Ryan, a college senior is focused on his attempt to open a drawer in an antique desk his mother had put in his room in their move in1959 and what we know as the Bell Mansion. He remembers a friend telling him that antique desks most times had hidden locks and recalling this, he begins to search for and finds the trigger to opening the desk. He finds "rocks," a letter, and a key. He meets Mary Beth, a recent college graduate as he returns to the mansion to go back to '59. Mary Beth has a sister and Mark has a brother. The four decide to go to Vegas and as high school/college age young people will do, they fail to consider "what if" when Mary Beth figures out a way to make travel money for the four to spend a couple days in Vegas.

No matter the guys are from '59 and girls are from another, they easily adapted to the other's time. Some tense moments, some scary people and Professor Bell learns that Ben and Piper spoke with his father at a seminar on, ta da! Time Travel..

John, you've done it again! (I even enjoyed the ending...) This is truly a peek into a bygone time--I never had an opportunity to see--except in the movies. Great writing, very smooth transitions and exciting action-packed thrills! Thanks -I'm looking forward to reading my next book (Indiana Belle). PLEASE keep writing!
2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 12 October 2016

I have read most of Mr. Heldt`s books and enjoyed them all - except this one. It seemed very shallow and full of pretty much nothing. There was seemingly endless small talk and devoid of almost any semblance of a plot. The end was quite predictable. Mr. Heldt has shown by his other novels that he is capable of doing much better.
