So now Cassie finds herself as heir to Pythia with an abundance of uncontrollable power. This is the main thread of the novel but so much more happens; action packed scenes, a mass of subplots that normally makes a story messy expect Chance makes it work, and a blossoming love triangle that has me completely torn. Brilliant writing!

The best series

This is the second book in the Cassie Palmer series, if you’re new to the series start with Touch the Dark. The series really ramps up here, Cassie is newly named as Pythia, she’s battling her rival for the power Myra, searching for her childhood guardian Tony to get back her fathers ghost and trying to break the Geis placed on her by Mircea, the vampire who protected her as an orphan. It’s fast paced, heavy on world building, great action scenes and plenty of romance but a great balance. If you like UF, enjoy historical fiction and a bit of time travel, these are the books for you.

Read the first of these when it came out. There obviously wasn't the option to pre-order so it was one of those series that passed me by. I found this by chance saw I had read the first so decided to give it a spin. Great story even if Cassie is a bit windy at times but like the supporting cast and off to read the next although they are a tad pricey.

Still not quite in its stride

I found the first book in this series a bit messy and problematic with far too many characters and too many explanations slowing down the action. I had hoped the second book would improve. I have to say, I found it much the same. This time the book focuses mainly on Cassie, Billy and Pritkin. An interesting choice as Pritkin is by far the least sympathetic or interesting character from the first book. The story gets off to a very slow start introducing yet more characters and more explanations (this time mainly to do with wards and the mages). It really doesn't get interesting at all until about 180 pages in. Before that point it's very slow and there is one conversation between Cassie and a new character Mac that goes on for pages and pages with very little respite. This time Cassie is trying to avoid her destiny as Pythia and deal with a spell Mircea has put on her.
Cassie's relationship with Mircea is the only thing I found interesting about this book to be honest and the scenes between them both in the past and the present were much better written than the rest of the book. There was also one scene, once they had entered Faerie that I found really unpleasant and unnecessary as it really didn't advance the plot in any way. My other complaint is the really cheesy way that a lot of the minor characters in the supernatural world are actually major figures from history. It's just distracting and leads to more unnecessary explanations.
It's a shame as there is potential in some of the characters- Cassie, Tomas, Billy, Mircea, Rafael (although he doesn't feature at all this time) but they are drowned out by the endless stream of other characters that whizz by at an amazing rate.
If the series were to continue with fewer characters and focus more on Cassie and her close relationships plus just one or two adversaries, then I would be interested in reading more. As it is, it's rather unsatisfying hard work to read the books.

Well written, funny & just a tad confusing

This is the start of a series of books about a heroine (Cassie) and the relatives of Dracula, but with a Back to the Future kick or twelve. Main players are: The Vampire Senate are the rulers of vamps, Silver Circle are the good magicians and their rep Pritkin, Black Circle the naughty magicians. Tomas is the attractive room mate with issues. Raphael - vampire & surrogate father to Cassie, who just happens to like painting. Billy-Joe is Cassie's pet ghost and all-round nut job. Not your average heroine, Cassie has blonde hair & blue eyes and plays up to the stereotype of a blonde blue-eyed female at times.
Cassie is a clairvoyant bent on revenge against the mobster vampire who killed her parents, Tony. She is a tough chick with a hard upbringing by said murderous vampire.
After a successful plot against Tony, she moves around in a bid to escape Tony's clutches, but is eventually tracked down and taken to the Vampire Senate after embroiling Tomas into the plot. Tony has also upset the Senate by plotting their downfall with their enemies. Tony's Sire is Mircea, who just happens to be Dracula's older brother and senior Senate member, also Cassie's first crush. Mircea & the Senate offer Tony's head if Cassie will only accept the responsibility of becoming Pythia- world's chief clairvoyant. How she is to become Pythia is another story......
Also interested in Cassie's future is John Pritkin of the Silver Circle's War Mage team - grown up Harry Potter types trained as supernatural commandos. Pritkin is not a fan of Cassie and they soon become fast enemies.
Cassie escapes, and has a run in with the Black Circle and ends up back at vamp HQ after Mircea, Pritkin & co go to the rescue.
Cassie accidentally discovers that she can shift through time to stop past events from being changed (a quirk of Tony's gang that is causing much destruction amongst the vamp community). The Senate are naturally interested in this. Cassie agrees to help. I found the time-traveling thing confusing, (try to avoid having a glass of wine when reading this as I did, it makes the confusion worse!) but there was a good combination of scary harrowing events with humor.
The combination of Cassie's infatuation with Mircea, Mircea's strange sense of humor (mainly shown in this book unfortunately), Pritkin being his homicidal but entertaining self, and Cassie being Cassie-like, is a great start to this highly entertaining series. I bought this book and quickly ordered the rest and the darker Dory spin offs and was not disappointed.
The humor and warmth of Cassie is along the lines of Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series, thankfully. Highly recommended.
