Product Description

Action-adventure books for the mystery lover. In this series, modern-day archaeologist and adventurer Matthew Connor travels the globe with his two closest friends to unearth treasure and discover legends the world has all but forgotten. Indiana Jones meets the twenty-first century.

Finding the Inca’s lost City of Gold would be the discovery of a lifetime. But failing could mean her death...

Archaeologist Matthew Connor and his friends Cal and Robyn are finally home after a dangerous retrieval expedition in India. While they succeeded in obtaining the priceless Pandu artifact they sought, it almost cost them their lives. Still, Matthew is ready for the next adventure. Yet when new intel surfaces indicating the possible location of the legendary City of Gold, Matthew is hesitant to embark on the quest.

Not only is the evidence questionable but it means looking for the lost city of Paititi far away from where other explorers have concentrated their efforts. As appealing as making the discovery would be, it’s just too risky. But when Cal’s girlfriend, Sophie, is abducted by Matthew’s old nemesis who is dead-set on acquiring the Pandu statue, Matthew may be forced into action. Saving Sophie’s life means either breaking into the Royal Ontario Museum to steal the relic or offering up something no one in his or her right mind can refuse--the City of Gold.

Now Matthew and his two closest friends have to find a city and a treasure that have been lost for centuries. And they only have seven days to do it. As they race against the clock, they quickly discover that the streets they seek aren’t actually paved with gold, but with blood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure Read. 28 November 2015
By Marianne Spitzer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I received an advanced Reading Copy of City of Gold and promised to write an honest review of the book. Since this book is an adventure novel, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it. It is not my typical genre for reading, but I have read Ms. Arnold’s detective and FBI series and decided it was worth my time to give the book a chance. I was curious to see if her talent would also shine in this new book. I was not disappointed, and Ms. Arnold has written an exceptional book.

I do not write reviews with spoilers, but I must comment on the cast of characters in this book. They are fully described and real. Matthew Connor, a trained archeologist who prefers adventures to archeologic digs, and his best friends Cal Myers and Robyn Garcia need to find the legendary golden city. El Dorado if you will. The place of dreams and countless failed expeditions. It doesn’t exist, but Matthew is determined to prove everyone wrong. If he fails his life and those that he cares about are in danger.

As the three set out for the Bolivian jungle with two guides and an unwelcome and edgy hired killer, the fast-paced adventure begins. Ms. Arnold’s ability to weave a story with twists and plots and unexpected surprises will take you deep into the jungle that she describes in perfect detail. As I read through the story, I felt as if I were living the adventure beside Matthew, Robyn, and Cal.

Don’t this miss this first book in an exciting new series. I can’t wait for the next book’s release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful new series by Arnold. 21 December 2015
By Barb - Published on Amazon.com
City of Gold by Carolyn Arnold is the 1st book in her new Matthew Connor Adventure series. I have read two of Carolyn’s other series, which are Police/FBI themed stories. It was a surprise that she was going a different direction with this new series, which is more like an Indiana Jones mystery archaeology theme; especially since Arnold is one of the best at police stories, with her wonderful knowledge of police procedurals. I am happy to say, even to my own surprise, that I really enjoyed City of Gold.

Matthew Connor is our hero, and a well known Archaeologist. From the start, the story begins with Matthew and his friends Cal and Robyn having just found a priceless artifact, running for their lives, literally over the cliff. Now safely back home at a Gala celebrating the finding, Cal tells Matthew about his girlfriend’s worry that someone is following them. A short time later, they learn information that could possibly lead to finding the legendary myth, City of Gold. All three are interested, though doubtful that it was real, since many people have searched for this for centuries. They are also very tired and need time, maybe months to consider if this adventure is worth undertaking.

As best laid plans do not always work out, someone is watching them, and wants the Pandu artifact that is now securely locked in a museum; and they have kidnapped Sophie, Cal’s friend. Matthew knows he cannot get the artifact anymore, and uses the temptation of finding the City of Gold to bargain with the kidnapper to save Sophie.

What follows is an exciting action packed adventure that will take Matthew, Robyn and Cal, as well as two people from the kidnapper’s side to Bolivia to join two guides who will help them try to find the City of Gold. For every step they take, danger and death threaten from all sides. The adventure was pulsating, and Arnold does a fantastic job of taking us through the jungle, caves, underground with many traps along the way.

Is the City of Gold real? Will Matthew and his team find it? Will they survive, and save Sophie? You need to read this book to find all the answers. This was a fun and exciting book, which I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed so much. I look forward to more from the Matthew Connor Adventure series. Carolyn Arnold has another winner.
5.0 out of 5 stars High Octane Thriller 27 February 2016
By MichelleLP - Published on Amazon.com
I am new to this author, but won’t be a stranger for long, this is easily one oft he best books I will read all year. The first paragraph sucks you in and then hang on for a non stop, pulse pounding ride. Matthew Connor is an archaeologist. He and his closest friends Robyn, the curator of a major metropolitan museum and Cal, a travel photographer, make up a treasure hunting team, the likes of which would make Indiana Jones proud. Like Indy, Matt has a nemesis who doesn’t mind playing dirty to get the goods. When Cal’s girlfriend Sophie is kidnapped in order to retrieve an artifact the team had found, the team must make a trek into the South American Jungle to find the fabled Incan lost City of Gold to use as leverage to get her back.

The first thing that struck me about this story was how it appeals to the five senses. I could feel bullets whipping by and hear the splintering of the trees. I could smell the perfumed guests at the party. I was trapped in underground tunnels and felt my heart bursting for air while under feet of water. This was an interactive reading experience. The characters are brought to a life-like status. Each carries his or his her own emotional attachment for the readers and none are unimportant. One would expect Matt and his team to carry the story with their adventures, with tagalong bad guys, into the jungle and underground caves with all the inherent dangers and traps along away the way, and they do. However, just as much is taking place back in Toronto where police and Matt’s team are closing in on their investigation of Sophie’s disappearance. There wasn’t a dull moment in this book. I highly recommend this high octane thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars "An Exciting and Suspenseful First Novel of the Matthew Connor Adventure Series" 28 November 2015
By Nancy L. Silk, Author/Reviewer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I received an ARC copy of this incredible story, "City Of Gold." Matthew Conner is a treasure hunter under the faux name of Gideon Barnes. However, his father William Conner, Mayor of Toronto, Canada believes his son is a working archaeologist. Matthew's team consists of Cal Myers and Robyn Garcia, for whom he has a deep love and respect. The team has recently brought back a Pandu statue which is placed in the local museum. Veronica Vincent wants the statue stolen and will go to any length to increase her wealth, even kidnapping Cal Myers girlfriend, Sophie. There is a legend about a hidden city within a remote rain forest of Peru, bordering also Bolivia. It is referred to as the location of the City of Gold. To save Sophie's life, the treasure team has one week to bring back proof of the location. Each character in this brilliant novel has individual challenges which the reader will find engulfing. Carolyn Arnold is a powerful and prolific author who successfully writes a wide range of genre. Her stories are excellently written, gripping and captivating. She'll definitely keep you well entertained.
