Kate Hewitt writes warm, healing contemporary love stories like nobody else I’ve ever read. In this story, Laurel and Archie are both scarred in their own ways and each is scared to commit their feelings for fear of being rejected. I loved so much about this book. There was Laurel’s brave attempts to somehow connect with her nephew Zac, who had his own issues. There was gruff Orkney farmer Archie who always seemed to be there to lend a hand when needed, was clearly a man’s man and yet made a divine lemon drizzle cake. I also loved that these two were not in their first blush of youth. It’s fabulous to see stories written about people in their thirties and forties because surprise, surprise. Love comes at many stages in our lives. I adored the setting for this story. Orkney is a remote place off the far north coast of Scotland, wild and yet very beautiful. Having visited recently it now holds a special place in my heart. Most of all though, I loved the way that Kate Hewitt wove this charming Christmas story, with her various characters learning to communicate, healing past wounds and learning to take a chance on love.

Family drama, festivities and the Orkney's - what a brilliant combination!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2020Verified Purchase
This is a brilliant festive romance, a superb Christmas cocktail with a delicious blend of family drama, idyllic, remote setting and, of course, a touch of romance, too.
Laurel West discovers that her older sister, Abby, has checked herself into rehab when she's asked to look after Abby's fourteen year old son, Zac. The sisters have been estranged for years but Abby helped bring Laurel up after their mother died and she's very willing to help. However, Zac is a rebellious teen and gets expelled from his school so Abby decides to take him to a place where she has the best, happy memories, her great Aunt's home on the Orkney Islands......
This story shares the angst and turmoil inflicted on the sisters as children and the very different impact it has had on their lives now. It is a second chance story, with both of them acknowledging the past and taking steps to move on to a brighter future. The initial arrival at her great Aunt's home is fraught with problems and some shocking encounters - including one with a gun pointed at them! It is a story of community, respect, family, friendship and taking chances and is a heartwarming festive read that I have no hesitation in highly recommending.

Liked meeting Laurel and Zac who as a teenager tried to have a no care attitude and being tough but underneath a soft and gentle scared boy as his mum Abby was unable to care for him as she went into rehab and passed the responsibility onto Laurel who took him to Orkney for Christmas after being excluded from school and met Archie the next door farmer of Laurel's great Aunt Elidh whose cottage was where they were staying as Laurel had fond memories of the place after more trouble Zac was given a job on the farm of Archie's and began to enjoy it then his mum turned up and after Christmas they went back to Abby's but Laurel had fallen in love with Archie and he with her so she went back and Archie told her he was coming to find her they were happy to have found each other Zac was happy and Abby was on the road to recovery

Read this book after reading an excerpt in one of her other books and felt I really wanted to know what happened. The characters were all lovely and I felt that I wanted to keep reading to find out more about them. If you like a nice feel good book then this is the one.

Lovely romantic Christmas read

Lovely, romantic Christmas read, I’m nearly a year late reading this one but it was worth the wait.
Would love to hear more about these characters, perhaps a serial set in Orkney might be lovely hint hint.
