Summary: Changelings are dying from Goblin Fruit, and the Queen doesn't care. Not only that, but the Queen has decided she has had enough of Toby and has banished her. Toby is tired of the Queen of the Mist's nonsense. Time for a change...
Review: Oh no, another excellent book from Seanan McGuire!! How can one person handle all these amazing books? Quite joyfully.
I love Toby's world, set in San Francisco, living right next to Faerie. Her world is already built, but we still got introduced to new types of characters, like the Cu Sidhe. They are fun! Toby's magic also expands, and she learns that much more about herself.
The plot is as exciting as usual, with Toby always getting close to running for her life. We see Toby stand up for herself to the queen, in a way that may have been unimaginable for her in the beginning of the series, but now, she's fed up with her. What I found most interesting, was the little hints made to Toby's history, especially relating to her mother and her aunt, the Luidaeg. In fact, at the end of the book we get a little short of a memory told from the Luidaeg's viewpoint of Amandine, and it was very telling. I can't tell you more without giving the plot away, but I'll say this: things are not always what they seem.
Our favorite characters have returned with all of their awesomeness. Tybalt, May, Quentin, Sylvester, all make appearances. Our not so favorite characters are there too, along with some new people. We finally meet Quentin's parents! (And my suspicions were correct on their identity).
Relationships are not the heavy focus in this novel, but now that Tybalt and Toby are dating, we see them enjoy the early stages of a relationship. Their love and loyalty to each other is as heartwarming as it is realistic. No teenage angst here, normal everyday adult emotions. Some strain appears in her relationship with Sylvester, and I wonder if that will get worse, or what it will mean for Toby in the future.
One of my issues, which actually isn't an issue yet, is the near death for Toby in every book. It is starting to feel a bit like the Final Destination movies, where we see new and creative ways for Toby to die, and it gets worse every book. I think it's still okay now, but I can see myself tiring of it in the future.
But as usual, Seanan McGuire produces a hit. I can't sing enough praises about this series, and if anyone loves the beautiful and cruel world of Faerie, this series is the series for you!
Violence: Toby almost dies, and other stuff
