Rob Thurman hat es mit ihrer "Cal Leandros"-Serie in den USA bereits in die Bestsellerlisten geschafft. Mit CHIMERA greift sie erneut das Thema zweier ungleicher Brüder auf und läßt einen von beiden aus der Ich-Perspektive in einem sarkastischen, mit spitzem Humor unterlegten Ton die rasanten Ereignisse schildern, die von jeder Menge Action geprägt sind. Dann hören allerdings die Gemeinsamkeiten auf und die Geschichte entwickelt sich in eine ganz andere Richtung.
Während einer wilden Verfolgungsjagd, die immer wieder unterbrochen wird von Rückblenden in die Vergangenheit, Gefechten mit den Verfolgern, und Kontakten mit den Mafia-Kumpanen der Korsaks, kommt es zu einem Kennenlernen der beiden Brüder, wobei Stefan immer wieder seine Erinnerungen an den damals 7-jährigen mit der Realität des jungen Mannes, der neben ihm sitzt, abgleichen muß.
Neben wissenschaftlichen Elementen, in denen es um Genmanipulation geht, Elementen aus X-Men, dem Paten, und einer Roadmovie-Atmosphäre, steht die Frage im Mittelpunkt, was die beiden verbindet und was ihre Auffassung von Gut und Böse im Hinblick auf ihre bisherigen Taten anbelangt. Der Übergang zwischen realistischen Szenarien in den USA der Gegenwart und den bereits bestehenden Möglichkeiten der Gentechnologie und die fiktiven Aspekte genetischer Manipulationen gehen nahtlos ineinander über und halten sich mit wissenschaftlichen Exkursen zurück, was den Spannungsbogen sehr straff hält und für eine sehr realistische Atmosphäre sorgt. Immer wieder kommt es zu völlig überraschenden Wendungen und einem Showdown mit einer Auflösung, die völlig unvorhersehbar mit einem Aha-Effekt daherkommt.

Neben der unglaublichen Spannung und der realistischen Atmosphäre liegt die Stärke der Geschichte in der Begegnung und Beziehung der beiden Brüder und ist genauso lesens- und empfehlenswert wie die ganze Cal-Leandros-Serie.

I'd not read any other books by Rob Thurman when I bought this and can honestly say that I wasn't too impressed to start with. However once it gets going I suddenly realised I had been hooked and couldn't stop reading it! It is a funny/sad/action packed book which I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys the 'supernatural' side of things on the book front. I liked it so much I went on to buy the Cal and Niko Leandros books!

Nichts zur Handlung. Unterhaltsame Geschichte mit road-movie-Charakter, Spannung, Action und interessanter Hintergrundgeschichte (Genmanipulation am Menschen). Der supercoole Stefan, der nicht halb so cool ist, wie er sich nach außen gibt. Deswegen der Punktabzug: Stefan ist das Pendant zu Cal in den Leandros-Brüder-Büchern. Das Thema ungleiche Brüder, die um ihrer selbst willen den anderen so sehr brauchen, wird hier noch einmal ausgereizt.

I am a fan of Rob Thurman's other works and she is easily one of my favorite urban fantasy/paranormal authors so I was excited but unsure of what to expect when I picked-up 'Chimera' which is a contemporary thriller with science fiction underpinnings.

Ten years ago, Stefan Korsak's younger brother was kidnapped. No one knew who took Lukas, or why. He was simply gone, but not a day has passed that Stefan hasn't thought about him. As a rising figure in the Russian mafia, he has finally found him. But when he rescues Lukas, Stefan must confront a terrible truth--his brother is no longer his brother. He is a killer. Trained, brainwashed, and genetically transformed into a flesh-and-blood machine with only one purpose. And those who created him will do anything to reclaim him.

Using technological rather than supernatural as the means of conversion in this tale, Thurman's tight narrative skillfully provides a beautifully crafted story about what it is that makes us human and the terms through which we define ourselves as we learn to trust and love. Originally written six years ago as a stand-alone novel, 'Chimera' lives up to the goal of creating a fully developed and engaging page-turner. This is one of the few books I've read recently that I could easily envision being adapted for the big screen smoothly - envision 'Eastern Promises' mashed-up with 'Gattica' and you've got a pretty good template for 'Chimera'.

'Chimera' is a book that is a little difficult to slap a label onto but I am confident that it would appeal to fans of Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy. I also intend to recommend this book to friends who have been a little shy about urban fantasy/paranormal fiction but whom enjoyed the Millennium Trilogy. Maybe I can use 'Chimera' as a gateway to luring more readers into genre fiction once they discover an author they already enjoy.

'Chimera' transcends genre fiction and is a welcome gem that I am hoping becomes a gateway for genre fiction more readers. More to the point, even though this book was originally written as a standalone, I would happily devour any follow-up to 'Chimera' if Rob Thurman would only write it.
