This movie was made in 2007 and I just watched it for the first time in 2018. I have no idea why I waited so long. But in spite of the passage of time, Children of Men doesn't feel the least bit dated. If this movie had been released last week instead of eleven years ago, nobody would have suspected a thing. Not only is the movie's concept still very relevant, but its direction is done with such intelligence and sensibility that it takes on a sort of timeless quality.
As the lead, Clive Owen plays a tough but charming cynic who is unexpectedly enlisted in an idealistic crusade to rescue humanity from itself. This he does to near perfection, whether he's delivering a sardonic remark or subtly communicating a range of emotions through his body language.
The script is full of funny, intelligent, and thoughtful lines. And the massively talented cast delivers every one of them, big and small, with gravitas and dedication.
The movie's sets immerse you deeply in a gritty dystopia while cleverly juxtaposing order with chaos in a way that blurs the lines between the two.
In short, I loved everything about this movie. With skilled directing, a highly intelligent script, an endearing cast and superb sets,Children of Men is a movie that deserves a place in the annals of science fiction history.
