Product Description

Emmanuel, Chevalier de Cantière, youngest son of a baron, is happiest raising horses far from his complicated family. When news comes his mother is deathly ill, he races to her side only to find she has apparently recovered and moved on, leaving behind her companion, Catherine.

Catherine de Fouet blends into the background, saving up so she’ll never have to wait on waspish, scheming old ladies like the baronesse again. She has no interest in a resentful gentleman, estranged from his mother, no matter how broad his shoulders or intriguing the wounded soul behind his handsome face. She just needs someone to escort her back to Versailles.

But Catherine is suspected of poisoning the baronesse. She rebuffs a pushy courtier who tries to use blackmail to make her his mistress, and her reputation hangs by a thread.

The chevalier wants more than anything to protect this woman whose prickly exterior hides sweetness and passion. They need his family to help him through court intrigues—almost as much as they need each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars How romantic! 20 October 2016

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for honest review.**

This book caught me by surprise for a few reasons. The story centers on Manu, who returns to his home after becoming informed of his mother's illness. However, he arrives to find that his mother has recovered and left without bothering to wait for him, thus further straining their relationship.

Manu's mother may be gone, but she has left her companion behind. Catherine strives to stay invisible. All she wants to do is keep Manu's mother happy for a while longer, or just until Catherine has earned enough money to leave and live on her own. Yet, a journey with Manu changes everything.

One thing that I was not expecting was how much this story involves Manu's entire family. I was impressed by the author's ability to weave so many vastly different characters together to create a flawed, yet growing and adapting, family. This is the third book of this series and has definitely increased my interest in reading the previous books.

Another surprise I found while reading was how largely my feelings about Manu and Catherine changed throughout the story. There were times that I wanted to slap Catherine and strangle Manu. Then again, I wanted to hug them both, too. To say that these were well fleshed-out characters would be an understatement.

I was only slightly disappointed by the romance. This is a sweet love story and I enjoyed reading it. I just hoped that when the magic finally happened, that we would get more than a few paragraphs with pretty poetic words. With the amount of angst and tension that had grown between the couple, I wanted to see that passion translate in the bedroom, too. It almost felt like the kissing scene was more intense than the actual love making.

In closing...
A sweet romance with a dash of mystery as two broken souls find solace in each other. Four suns for The Chevalier!

4.0 out of 5 stars but I don't think it's necessary to have done so in order to enjoy this story 1 November 2016

The Chevalier is the third book in the Château and Shadows series by Philippa Lodge. I haven't read the previous books, but I don't think it's necessary to have done so in order to enjoy this story. I must be honest and say that the story started off fairly slowly, but I persevered. I am glad that I did, because as the story progressed it became more enjoyable. Once the mystery kicked in I was hooked.

This is the story about Emanuel, Chevalier de Cantière. He is the youngest son of a baron and has quite a complicated background because of animosity between his mother and father. For three years he hasn't seen his mother, but when he hears from his father that she is deathly ill, Manu makes his way with all haste to be at his mother's side. By the time he arrives, not only is his mother better, she's actually gone, making her way to court in Paris. She left behind her companion who had also fallen ill and wasn't better by the time she was ready to travel. So it's left to Manu to chase after his mother, not only to see for himself that she is well, but also to return the companion to his mother's side.

The companion is Catherine De Fouet. She is a quiet woman who just wants to get on with her job, saving all the money she can so that one day she can travel to her lands in Normandy, and take back her home that she has had to rent out. She wants nothing more than to never be a companion again, and in time she is sure her plan will come to fruition.

When Manu meets Catherine for the first time, although there is animosity between them, there is also an instant attraction. Both of them imagining kissing the other etc. Neither thinks that a romance between them is a possibility, but it doesn't stop them and their imaginings.

Manu's father thinks it is high time that Manu gets married. Knowing that he is having to go to court to see his Mother, he tells Manu that he has a list of potential women that would make a suitable wife for him. He expects Manu to look out for the women and decide which one he wants to marry. He's not keen on the idea at all, though he does know that he is getting on at the grand old age of 25 and will need to settle down and have children soon.

The rest of the story follows the journey for Manu and Catherine to find his mother. Spending time together makes them both realise there is a lot to like about each other, but any thought of romance takes a back seat when they finally reach Manu's mother because they discover that somebody has been trying to kill her!! Can they find the would be murderer before it's too late, and will they allow a romance between them develop when the time is right? Or will it never be right?

Apart from the slow start that I mentioned at the beginning of my review, this book was a good one to read, and you can't help but feel compassion for all the characters, especially Manu and his siblings who have had such a complicated upbringing because of their parent's separation. The romance between our hero and heroine could have been more in the fore of the story, but it's understandable that it had to take a back seat at times. All in all I did enjoy the book and do recommend it. But if you are looking for a very romantic story with lots of passionate moments and perhaps a bedroom scene or two, this isn't the book for you.

I voluntarily read an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.

I loved this book! I haven't read a historical romance in a while and this was beautifully written ... reminded me of the Master, Georgette Heyer! The characters were interesting and believable, I plan to read the rest of the series.
