I saw the 3rd edition of this textbook in our local library, liked it and bought the latest edition via Amazon.
Generally newer editions are better than previous ones, because more information is added and previous mistakes are corrected. I am disappointed that the 4th edition of this textook has omitted a number of chapters that are available in the 3rd edition. Why do publishers do this? They took a perfectly good textbook, watered it down and called it next edition.
If you are looking to buy this textbook, rather see if the 3rd edition is still available.

Product description
Review
'The book is successful in achieving its aims and would be an excellent workbook for students from foundation courses through to first year undergraduates.' - Education in Chemistry Magazine 'I would reccomend this book to students who need a grounding in chemistry at university...I would also use this as a reference book for both support and extension at A-level...' - School Science Review '[A] comprehensive introductory undergraduate text covering all the essentials required for a foundation chemistry course.' - Education in Chemistry '[G]ood value for money... Well written - clear explanations of concepts...' - Dr Jennifer Bochmann, School of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy, University of East Anglia, UK 'I like it and more importantly so do a range of students.' - Paul Kneller, School of Conservation Sciences, University of Bournemouth, UK 'The book is well structured, comprehensive and readable and covers key material that students should know' - Leonard Stevenson, Department of Consumer Studies, Liverpool John Moores University, UK 'Student friendly. Well thought out. For learners not teachers' 'I have been training as a paramedic and I needed a basic chemistry book for some sections of the syllabus. I was very pleased to find this book: it seems designed for people like me rather than super students of chemistry. There are plenty of problems which test you before you move on to the next text.' 'It picks up with GCSE level Chemistry and quickly covers the basics of atoms, molecules, structures etc and then diverges into a good coverage of most branches of Chemistry - certainly all the ones I need, including Organic, Nuclear, Forensic and some very basic Biochemistry. The appendices are useful and having answers to all exercises is good for a book used outside a course curriculum... I use it to dip into and so far it has answered all my questions at exactly the right level of detail. I only wish I'd had it while at University!' 'This book was recommended to me by a university lecturer... It's a great book for A'Level or Foundation degree level students as the topics covered are fairly basic but it explains everything very clearly. Made my first year much easier as I was always dipping into this book. The questions do help with revision too.'
From the Back Cover
The fourth edition of this popular, student-friendly textbook provides a course in chemical literacy. With complete yet concise coverage of core topics, it starts from scratch and assumes only minimal prior experience of mathematics and science.
This new edition has been fully updated and now features full-colour throughout. It contains a section on special topics such as environmental chemistry, forensic chemistry and nuclear and radiochemistry and also includes two new chapters on 'chemistry saving lives' and the hydrogen economy. A companion website provides additional material and enables students to watch experiments.

A must have book

Bought this for a family member who was undertaking the Birkbeck certificate for life sciences who had never studied chemistry beyond GCSEs. I would recommend this book for the certificate or a science access course as it explains key concepts concisely and clearly.
