This can mostly be read as a stand alone with a few references back to book #1. While this does have action, danger and drama, it didn't grab me like I thought it would. First it was disappointing that Sam, a dark witch, sounded just like Rowyn a Hunter from the Shadow and Light series. They are from the same paranormal world, but there aren't any personality distinctions between the two. They both are easily distracted by a pretty face/body of the opposite sex and are entirely too preoccupied with thinking about sex. Wouldn't it be refreshing change to have the heroine be smart, capable and not turn into a drooling hormone driven idiot when she sees a good looking man? Maybe I'm not too enamored of Sam because she seems to be ineffectual in her spells and often at the mercy of demons on top of being out of shape compared to Rowyn. She can't use her "super power" because it's a big secret so what's the point? She ends up on the short end of the stick here hoping to be saved like a damsel in distress. The next book seems more promising due to the cast of characters at the end leaving me to wonder how things will shake out for Sam. No cliff hangers and the story is complete in this book.
Wonderful story!!Reviewed in the United States on 1 May 2020
I love paranormal series. This is the second book in Kim Richardson's Dark Files series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but does have references to things that happened in the first book, so it is THAT much better when the books are read in order. Book 1 is Spells & Ashes. Book 2 is Charms & Demons, this one. The characters are unique to this series and so wonderful I can't wait for more!

I liked the first, but the second is pretty much the same as first. Additionally, the author seems unsure of the personalities of characters. I honestly thought Logan was a demon posing as Logan at one point. While I finished the book, and it seemed to go pretty quickly, nothing is there at this point to keep me going with this series.
Good endingReviewed in the United States on 28 August 2020
She became more self-assured of herself. One wondered if she would find the power she needed.i hope in book three she continues to grow in strength and character. Anything else would be a waste of writing.
