Product Description

Book 3 of the best-selling Charlie Smithers Collection

Flashman never experienced anything like this, not even remotely!

Whether it’s because of his gift of the ‘sight,’ inherited from his dour old Hebridean mum, or simply a sorely battered noggin (a result of his master’s appalling aim)the Australias hold one of Charlie Smithers’ most intriguing adventures to date.
Pirates, great white sharks, mermaids, scorching deserts, cannibals and a small army of sadistic bushrangers are only part of the story. A mysterious gunslinging sheila with emerald green eyes, and a shocking vocabulary, is another adventure all on its own.

And throughout the tale there is the innocuous message from a ghost from Charlie’s past: “You must learn to forgive…”

I am so out of my league in the frail attempt I'm about to make on writing a review of this latest book (the third, in "The Adventures of Charlie Smithers" series) by C W Lovatt.

An extraordinary talent is Mr Lovatt.

Charlie is now in the land Downunder amidst all of us Aussie sheilas and blokes. Ha! We are a colourful mob, and he has done a smashing job of depicting our irrepressible Aussie politically incorrect outlook on life. Even then, in 1866, we were an irreverent lot, totally confusing at times, but a strong people living in a unforgivably harsh land.

C W Lovatt has captured our essence, both of the aborigines and we whiteys. We demand you acknowledge our independent nature, but don't forget to hold the door open for me gentlemen, I love that!

"Charlie! What? Are you sure your name is Charlie, Smithers? I could have sworn it was...." Lord Brampton, (our lovable bumbling fool.) He continues to have NO idea that when he attempts to save Charlie, he comes close to causing the exact opposite. Each episode will make you simultaneously cringe with apprehension and giggle at his unfailing ineptitude.

This is another beautifully written story, the prose, faultless, the pidgin, delightful and the description of the land (vernacular included) 'spot on, mate!'

This time Charlie experiences spirituality he never dreamed existed. This gives us, as readers, a deeper look at the author himself. The tale is magical, a love story, wrapped around folklore and so cleverly entwined with history, that I found it nearly impossible to differentiate fact from fiction.

"I bravely huddled as close to her as was humanly possible"

After battling the high seas and villainous pirates, Charlie Smithers lands down under with a splash and surfaced to have a bloody good, fair dinkum Aussie adventure. Saved from certain death by the mysterious and charming Mattie they head off on a perilous and often dangerous trek through the Aussie desert, eventually meeting up with a group of aborigines, Charlie endears himself to the natives, learns about dream time and embarks on some pretty special dreaming himself. There was many a time I thought poor Charlie was a goner but true to form Charlie came through to adventure another day. This book has it all and portrays the Aussie outback and the Aussie larrikin way of life perfectly, strewth! I even shed a tear or two as I neared the end.
This is a must read for anyone who loves their adventures to be wildly entertaining.
Onya Chuck.

I have read and enjoyed the first two books in the Charlie Smithers series and have been looking forward to this one that takes place in the wilds of Australia. These are great characters and the story includes history, adventure, and humor so it is exactly what I needed. I wonder where Charlie will end up next?

5.0 out of 5 stars Poor Charlie gets shot more by the lord then anyone ... 2 February 2016

Once again C. W. has delivered a must read. We join Charlie and Lord Brampton aboard a ship being taken over by pirates. Poor Charlie gets shot more by the lord then anyone else. From pirates, sharks and the lord Charlie survives to meet the intriguing Mattie, to begin his adventure in Australia. Mr. Lovatt delivers the history and hardships of Australians surviving down under. I can't wait until the next adventure. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast paced action with a bit of humor and romance to make it even better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smithers Insight into Oz ... Fair Dinkum 15 March 2016

I am sampling a few of the faux history books that follow in the footsteps of the original Flashman series. This particular book usesbutler-Man Friday Charlie Smithers as the self-depricating hero who, without any claims to proficiency in anything seems to MacGiver himself out of anything that gets thrown in his way.. I like the technique of pulling real historic characters into a narrative held together by Smithers. it does give a chance to hypothetically see these pieces of history in a story context. Interesting enough for those who like more action adventure than history, so a bit more fun to read.

C.W. Lovatt's "Charlie Smithers - Adventures Down Under" is a gripping and totally fabulous tale where characters make you discover the Australian outback in all it's glory. It reminded me of Jules Verne's incomparable writing with a touch of humor and just enough details to unveil the paronama of this harsh but yet tentalizing country. Absolutely recommending it - Well done Chuck !Charlie Smithers: Adventures Downunder
5.0 out of 5 stars I'm quite sure I will enjoy Adventures Down Under 6 June 2016

I can't review Down Under. I just about to start it. Just 2 days ago finished the India adventure. I'm quite sure I will enjoy Adventures Down Under. The thing is Charlie grows on you. And leaves you wondering what Charlie will get into next. Lovatt will disappoint a lot of readers if he doesn't allow Charlie to continue his adventures in other places. Charlie has a romantic side along with a comedic side & leaves us looking forward to more exotic places & adventures.
