I have read this book from cover to cover. The book gives an fascinating insight to the world of psychiatry and mental illnesses. It is written in a simple language and covers a wide range of illnesses and treatments. Dr Mark Cross provides many anecdotes about his patients that are full of empathy and understanding.
The book is also very practical and provides anyone with mental illnesses or people that their loved ones have a mental illness the information needed to start the journey towards recovery. For every illness the book provide a detailed definition of it, its treatment, and where to go for further help in Australia.
Dr. Mark Cross talks in the book about the evolution of psychiatry, past and present treatments, in a very loving way. It successfully argues the stigmas around the illnesses and their respective treatments. It is important to note that Dr Mark Cross provides wide range of views and reasoning about the treatments in this book and that medication is only one part of it. Talking therapies and community support are also featured extensively in the book.

Having seen the Changing Minds series on television, I was most impressed with Dr Mark Cross, who was warm, engaging, empathetic, and with a great sense of humour. These traits shine through in his book.
If I have to make a criticism, it would be the poor punctuation in the Kindle version of the book. I hasten to add that, having had a South African education, Dr Cross would have an excellent grounding in grammar. I suspect the fault lay with the type setters, or whoever is responsible.
For anyone with an interest in mental illness, or a friend or family member who is so troubled, read this book; it cuts through the mystery and, dare I say it, stigma, and provides answers to a myriad of questions.
