The book includes good examples of command use and Switch/Router responses but for the best experience I suggest the use of some kind of simulator or better still go and buy some switches and routers on eBay to create your own lab to play with (what I did). This was also invaluable.
The book included a Boson exam prep test which was also very helpful.
I would have given the book 5 stars but as mentioned the exam did ask questions about some areas that the book did not cover. The extra exam materials I used helped to highlight this allowing me to use internet resources to cover some of those holes. Finally the other reason for a lost star is the number of small mistakes in the text. Ensure you go to the Cisco Press website and download the Errata. This is very important!
The book had these neat little "what do you know" tests in the beginning of the chapters that you could take to test your prior knowledge on the subject - I would go back after reading the chapter and re-do them just to see what I had been able to absorb. The worksheets on the CD were pretty good and the practice tests were nice.
Overall, not a bad buy for the price!
He hasn't gotten to the practice questions on the CD in the back of the book but so far the book has been worth a lot more than we paid for it. Today that's unusual.
If you are new to Cisco or networking, I recommend starting with Todd Lammle's book first. Wendell Odom's book is very detailed, but it will be more difficult to start with. My study method was reading Todd's book first, watching the video series from CBT Nuggets, and then I read this book (passed with a 937). I thought I had a good grasp of the CCENT topics before I read Wendell's book, but the questions asked before each chapter were challenging. Wendell explained all of the details that were skipped in the other training methods I used.
When I created practice labs for myself and ran into snags, I used Wendell's book as a reference every time. The chapters are organized in a very logical way.
Good luck to everyone taking the exam!
