After years of hiding her true nature, Miss Temperance Flowerdew is finally enjoying freedom outside of the shadow of her relations, so the last thing she expected on her way to work was to be grabbed off the street by a stranger and put on a train bound for Chicago.
When Mr. Gilbert Cavendish is called upon to rescue a missing woman, he follows the trail to Chicago only to discover that the woman is his good friend, Temperance. Before they can discover who was behind her abduction, they're spotted alone together by a New York society matron, putting their reputations at risk.
Even though Gilbert is willing to propose marriage, Temperance is determined not to lose her newfound independence. But when the misunderstanding in Chicago escalates into a threat on her life, accepting Gilbert's help in solving the mystery may lead to more than she ever could have dreamed. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

I love Jen's word craft. Her books always make me laugh ( not an easy feat). I have enjoyed every book of hers I have had the good fortune to read. This book was fun, although ( in my opinion) not one of her best. The story lagged a bit at the beginning, although it improved toward the end. Loved the characters and the great tie-up at the end.

So so funny

this is book # 3 , so funny and light, I wish I could watch a mini-series of these books, as it it such a wonderful read. I found a smile on my lips while reading this book. If you can read all three books in a row that would be great as the characters will be fresh in your mind

Laugh Out Loud Historical Romance

I have been a huge fan of Jen Turano since I read and reviewed her first book A Change of Fortune. With each book the cast of characters are more delightful, entertaining, and will put you in a fit of stitches.
I don't usually find others predicaments funny, like getting snatched off the street, but since these were characters and not real it was perfectly appropriate to laugh, and I mean laugh out loud. Which I did a lot of.
One of the fun things about series is that we get to catch up with characters from the previous books in the series. And Ms. Turano places them in funny predicaments as well. So, just when you think you're done laughing, believe me you're not!
I loved Temperance because she says and does what she wants, which definitely goes against society's norm. She's sassy and snarky, which is what I love in an heroine.
The sweet friendship between Gilbert and Temperance was real and so endearing. I loved that he just didn't give up on her. He was a true knight in shining armor.
The secondary characters were just as lovable as the main characters. They supported the story perfectly.
My Bottom Line:
I loved every minute of this story, and the characters. The suspenseful parts were like those of a cozy mystery which was delightful. The faith thread dealt with forgiveness of not only self but others. It was woven nicely throughout the book.
I wasn't expecting a mystery at all, and I had no idea what was going to happen next. The crazy situations that all of the characters found themselves in were utterly hilarious.
If you are looking for a "Calgon, take me away moment," look no further. This book is a perfect historical rom-com and I highly recommend it!

“How is it possible I forgot what an interesting place your mind is?”
Rounding out this series of wallflowers who find their own voice - and a happily-ever-after in the process - is Caught By Surprise and we finally get Temperance's story. And what a story it is! In fact, it's almost like Turano pulled out all the stops for this final book of the series and threw in several tropes at once. Friends-to-more. Impending marriage-of-convenience. Destitute, orphaned heiress. Noble hero. Mistaken identity. Bumbling henchmen. Nefarious villains. Miss Snook's School for the Education of the Feminine Mind. Almost Oscar Wilde-ish in its mayhem and hilarity. At one point it's almost farfetched but you're having too much fun with these characters to care, and you happily suspend disbelief when needed.
Bottom Line: The strength of Caught By Surprise lies in its supporting characters this time around, though Temperance and Gilbert are certainly delightful protagonists. I loved watching their childhood friendship reconnect, their genuine affection and love for each other developing into romantic love much as we saw with Harrison & Gertrude in Out of the Ordinary. I also loved watching Temperance blossom into who she was always created to be. Still, it's the ragamuffin pack of secondary characters that made this story so enjoyable for me - Miss Henrietta, Miss Mabel, Miss Snook, Mr. Barclay, and most definitely the brother-sister team of Eugene and Mercy. Hilarious and endearing, they add further dimension and emotion to the story, and I would love hanging out with them all again sometime.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I bought for my own collection.)

Hey Hallmark Channel, I've got a book ready to be made into a movie for you!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 24 October 2018Verified Purchase
There are few authors that I can honestly say, the books would actually be even better as movies. Jen Turano is one of those authors. She writes her stories from an up and close (zoom in) perspective, but also from a "zoom-out" lens equally as well. I can see the pictures rolling about in my mind as I am reading her books and it is truly delightful. This book, I would say is the best one I've read to be made into a wonderful TV or big screen movie. Hey, Hallmark Channel are you listening???
If you are able to go into Jen's books with a less than 100% eventuality base then you are all set. Her books are made to be slightly off reality at times and that's what makes them fun and unpredictable. That's the point. Unusual, practically impossible, circumstances that take you on a roller coaster from start to finish. This one had multiple surprise endings which was fun too.
I really appreciated the ending of this three part series and the wrap up that occurred at the epilogue. One of my big pet peeves is an author wrapping up an entire book in a few measly paragraphs after I've invested my heart and emotions into a story. Well done!
I bought this book for me to be read and enjoyed by me!

This is a wonderful historical romantic comedy!

I love the variety of quirky characters that this author has created for this series. It was so much fun looking in on them all again and catching up with the main characters from both of the earlier books. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Miss Temperance Flowerdew and Mr. Gilbert Cavendish take center stage in this final book in the series.
Temperance has come out of her shell and is letting her natural character traits shine forth for all of New York to see. She gets into the most amazingly hilarious situations that kept me laughing. At times it was laugh-out-loud funny and had people giving me very strange looks.
Gilbert has his own peculiar traits that he is working hard to tame so that he can connect with Temperance better. His efforts are just as funny as Temperance’s situations. He is steady and by her side throughout the story.
They find themselves in many dangerous situations which seems to be typical of this author’s writing style. They are surrounded by a number of staunch friends and supporters that are willing to step in and help immediately.
