Product Description

She's on the hunt for a hero...

Luke Trenton, Viscount Merritt, returned from war a changed man. Battle stripped away his civility and brought out his inner beast. There is no charm or tenderness in him now; only dark passions and a hardened soul. He has nothing to offer the starry-eyed, innocent girl who pledged her heart to him four years ago.

But Cecily Hale isn't a girl any longer. She's grown into a woman--one who won't be pushed away. She and Luke are guests at a house party when a local legend captures their friends' imaginations. While the others plunge into the forest on a wild goose...er, stag chase, Cecily's on the hunt for a man. She has only a few moonlit nights to reach the real Luke...the wounded heart she knows still beats inside the war-ravaged body...or she could lose him to the darkness forever.

This is a novella of approximately 20,000 words, or 80 pages. It was originally published under the title The Legend of the Werestag.

I saw that this authors book 'When a Scot Ties the Knot' was getting rave reviews so I downloaded this free novella to see if I liked the author enough to pay $10 for the bestseller.

This was a very good novella about a Viscount who feels unable to love his former sweetheart when he comes back from war. I can't fault this book but it didn't engage me fully. Maybe it was the length? For whatever reason it didn't inspire me enough to go and buy her best seller when there is buckets of excellence for around $5.

This was an unexpectedly short story with not a lot of conflict.

3.0 out of 5 stars A so-so story 3 September 2014
By kshrop - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This is apparently an early effort by the author and the short story has been re-released under a new title. The story was cute and a little steamy, but there were no surprises. This was not a paranormal romance, though the characters in the story were looking for a 'creature'.

The heroine has waited for the man she loves to return home for four years. The hero has been away fighting and has returned a changed man. He has had to fight hand-to-hand against the enemy, and he has had to kill or be killed. He has been wounded. In his mind he has become an animal and unworthy of the heroine's love.

The hero thinks she is still the sweet young girl he had left behind. He hadn't been in love with her when he left but the memory of her is what kept him alive.

The heroine has changed too but he doesn't realize that. She still looks sweet and delicate but she tended wounded soldiers while he was away. She saw injuries and didn't turn away.

This isn't one I will read again but it was a good way to spend an afternoon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Love Story 25 August 2014
By Panda Fan - Published on Amazon.com

Luke Trenton, Viscount Merritt, is fighting the inner demons 4 years of fighting in war have left him with. Cecily Hale has waited 4 years for Luke's return and is determined to fight for his love before she loses him forever. While the story itself was short and a quick read, I felt it was very heartwarming. Note: No "werestags" were harmed in the telling of this story. However, it does contain explicit adult content.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick Read **3 1/2 Stars** 24 November 2014
By Reading Fanatic - Published on Amazon.com

This was a really quick read...a little too quick, to be honest. Yet still, the story that unfolds is sweet and engaging. After four years of fighting in the Napoleonic war, Luke has returned to England, a changed man. He is no longer the happy, carefree gentleman he was before he left. Cecily Hale has loved Luke for years and has waited faithfully for his return to England, in hopes that they will have a future together. Unfortunately, when the two are reunited, she discovers that Luke is nothing like the gentleman she remembers. He is dark, brooding, and withdrawn, not to mention cold and distant.

When the story begins, Luke and Cecily have already reunited. The two are in attendance at a small house-party at the estate of Cecily's distant cousin, Denny, the man that everyone expects her to marry--including Denny, himself. After several days of being under the same roof, it has become painfully obvious to Cecily that Luke does not hold her in the same regard as she does him. As a matter of fact, the man barely acknowledges her presence.

Then one night when the entire party goes traipsing off into the neighboring woods to hunt a mythical creature, everything changes. After a near-death encounter with a wild boar, Cecily decides that what she wants is a man who will fight for her. Will Luke be that man, or will she settle for a pleasant life with the ever affable Denny? I have to say that this story was really sweet. I do wish it were a bit longer, though. As it is, the reader is given only a glimpse of the past relationship that existed between Luke and Cecily. Furthermore, I would have liked to have seen more of Cecily and Luke together. Although the two spent several days together at the house-party, the reader only gets to read about events that unfold over a twenty-four hour period. Consequently, I felt a bit cheated of more time with the couple.

Nevertheless, I found the story engaging and quite touching. IMO, the author did a nice job portraying Luke's inner angst. One thing I didn't like is that, although Luke didn't want to marry Cecily himself, he wanted her to continue to pine for him for the rest of her life. He even took steps to give her a kiss by which she would be doomed to unfavorably compare every other kiss she ever received. I thought that was really selfish of him. On the other hand, Luke was so messed up mentally, that I wasn't too offended by that fact, and thankfully, it didn't last too long.

This is definitely a book that I would recommend as a worthwhile read. It's only about 70 pages or so--ending right around 77% in the book--and is the perfect length for bedtime reading. I read it in just over an hour. Oh, FYI, this is not a clean romance. There are a couple of love scenes, which are quite descriptive, although not, IMO, overly graphic. Furthermore, no crude language is used. Happy reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Novella in Search of an Audience 12 January 2017
By Connie - Published on Amazon.com

I was amazed that this was Ms. Dare's first published work. There is nothing amateurish about the beauty of the prose and the sense of longing she creates. This is the second title of the book and I would submit that it probably needs a third. Both the title and cover would lead you to believe this is the typical bodice ripper full of the usual intrigue, secrets, and a rake for a hero. This is the very reason this title has been sitting on my ereader unread for six months. I suspect it is why there are a number of disappointed readers for what is a most enjoyable story. If people are looking for a promisculous bad boy, he is not in this book.

The novella features two people following the Napoleonic Wars. Cecily has waited four years, without word, for Luke to return from war. No promises were made prior to his leaving and she is left wondering if she imagined his feelings for her. The man who comes back has clearly changed and shows little interest in her. Luke is unable to see that four years has also changed Cecily and his inability to understand who she has become as a woman creates a huge stumbling block. If you are looking for something unusual, give this a try.

The 'wild' in this title does not refer to thoughtless, promisculous behavior, but the very nature of our viscount who no longer seems himself as a gentleman having lived through the horrors of war. This was a poignant, lovely story and one which I would be happy to reread in the future. Kudos to an author brave enough to step out of the formulaic romance box to create a charming example of literature.

4.0 out of 5 stars I believe you won't be disappointed with this cute short story 27 September 2014

At the beginning I didn't like the book. Silly dialogues, showered with SAT test vocabulary, and smut story in the making suggesting topics of conversation.
I plodded on, however, and discovered the story describing friendships, a person would like to see in real life. Description of the gathering of friends, like the one that gave us Frankenstein had to be. Slowly we learn of the history these people shared and the tension between the most important heroes. HE and SHE were separated for four years by the war. Now they are changed. HE considers himself damaged, not good enough for HER. SHE tries to convince HIM otherwise. Then HE saves HER life fighting a wild boar, but keeps it secret. SHE guesses, of course. That moment is the turning point, THEY find their happy end. The secondary couple has their happy end, too.
The boar fight made me chuckle. RESEARCH Ms. Dare! Unarmed person has no chance whatsoever with this animal, once the fight starts. Boars never give up, and their tusks make too powerful weapons for the hero to walk out as a winner. But... I let it fly. I will give a huge leeway to a writer who speaks correct English and can say:"As IF he WERE a child".
Overall this was a quick, engaging, morally clean story. I will remember this author.
