"These are the best sorts of stories: patient, inventive, expansive, quietly subversive and devilishly sly. Each one invites the reader to listen, to learn, to peek under the mask of the world, to be astonished. I love Kritzer's work, and I always will." --Kelly Barnhill, Newbery Medalist
"Kritzer's sharp, bittersweet memorable stories will stay with you long after you close the book." --Jo Walton, author of Among Others--This text refers to the paperback edition.

And the title story was just enormous fun!
“Ace of Spades” is about an American war journalist with Huntington’s in China in a war being fought by American robots called Peacekeepers.
“The Golem” is assembled by two young women in December 1, 1941. While the golem is a woman, she remembers when she was created before. She is also able to see when and where people will die. So, like the AI in the first story she starts changing things.
In “Bits” aliens landed on earth over a year ago and the customer service employee of a sex toy company is asked to make relations easier.
“So Much Cooking” is why I bought this collection. I read the Kritzer essay on tor.com that lead to the writing of this story in 2015 about an H1N5 Coronavirus- like shutdown from the POV of a food blogger. First, she’s cooking for parties and her boyfriend, then her two nieces, until she’s cooking for six children, in their two- bedroom condo. It’s a beautiful heartbreaking story of this minute, but more virulent, that is still somehow hopeful. I hope that the Nebula and Hugo people can figure out a way for this five -year -old story to win this year. $4.99 Kindle.
Kritzer is a gifted short story writer. Buy this book. You'll be glad you did.
This book was so impressive that I soon read all of Naomi's published books. I cannot wait to see what worlds of wonder she might take us to with her future books but I will certainly be waiting with bated breath!
A very diverse collection (although obviously all related in some fashion to sci-fi. I like her writing style and she has a good sense of humor sprinkled throughout. I will give her full novel a read now.
