My dog HATES having her nails cut - when she was younger she was active enough that they wore naturally, but as she's gotten older they tend to grow pretty long (although not dangerously so) and I've not been great about familiarizing her with nail care. I tried the Dremel approach, but that was useless - the grinding wheel is too slow to make any sort of progress in a reasonable period of time. That left me with clippers.... And these have worked very well so far. They are sharp enough that I can sneak in and trim one before she gets anxious. Sure, it's gonna take two weeks to do them all, but whatever. :) Hard to say how durable they ultimately will be, but frankly for the price I'm not too concerned. My sole complaint is that even the large size is not that large, so it's a bit clumsy to use them - if the handle was a bit larger they'd be more comfortable for me, and if the blade section was a bit longer it'd be more comfortable for her. Still, totally a totally workable solution as is.
I had purchased the large clippers for my thirty pound Shetland Sheepdog and I wasn't as happy as I thought I'd be. These are too lightweight in my opinion, and since dog nails are quite sturdy, this tool made mostly of plastic, was a challenge at making the first clip. I seem to believe the blades might not be as sharp as they should be, aiding in the struggle with getting through the nail. The file that had come as a bonus, however, I could use with success.
This product was tremendously cheap. I am honestly surprised by all the positive reviews. Out of the packaging, the black little clip in between the handles to keep them locked together was broken and the nail filer was crooked/slanted. The rubber handles of the clippers were torn and scraped as if someone dropped them out of a fast moving car. Not to mention they're a lot smaller and thinner than I thought. There are others on Amazon that snugly fit into your hand, but not these.
these work great. i just adopted a dog with severely overgrown front nails... the foster mom she was with before said the dog was VERY skiddish about touching her feet/nails. with some hotdog coaxing, we finally got the dog to sit still to get the clippers on her nails, these clippers got some decent chunks of her overgrown nails off without alot of effort or strain... we didn't want to stress out the dog so we stopped after a few nails and will come back to finish later, but these clippers definitely get 'er done.
The safety latch broke the first time I used the clippers and the nut/bolt assembly to keep the nail guard in place won't stay tightened. I wish I still had the packaging to return this item or request a replacement.
Gave it two stars because the clippers do cut clean. And the file is a nice added tool, but not entirely a necessity.
Overall: Poor craftsmanship on the clippers, but at least it does the job.
These are pretty good clippers, we have a dog with pretty darn thick nails and it cut fairly cleanly and we didnt see any crushing or splitting. The handles are not too flimsy, they are a little large for my hands, but my son's hands handled them fine. Dropping a star because the guard kept getting in the way of clipping, and the lock kept catching during clipping, which can be dangerous to the nail. I havent tried the file yet, since we have a nervous dog, and just clipping drives him up a wall, but they looked to be sturdy enough.
Overall, i like them, i will see how long they cut this well, but for now they work well.
Usually get my dog’s nails trimmed at the groomer, but Covid forced me to try DIY nail clipping. I was nervous that I might hurt my pup, but these gave a clean snip. Easy peasy. Never going back to the groomer for nail trims again.
I've been using metal wire clippers on my Rottweiler's nails for years because I could never find a nail clipper specifically for dogs that could effectively cut through his bear claws without damaging the whole nail. These clipped right through his nails with no fuss and didn't even hurt my hand to squeeze!
I bought these years ago. I have NEVER been able to use them, they have scarred me and my dog. Everytime i get tired of paying someone to cut my dogs black nails I pull these out. They crush and splinter my dogs nails, I thought it was my technique forever but they are just dull junk.
