***UPDATE*** After owning this watch for a couple months now, I have run into a serious problem. The analog hands a losing time while the digital display remains correct. The hands seem to be losing around 5 minutes a day. This issue can be resolved temporarily by setting the hands to the correct time however they immediately begin to lose time after the hands are set correctly. Due to this, I am going to reduce my prior 4-star rating to 3 stars. I am going to be contacting Casio directly to resolve this issue. Once I do so, I will supply an additional update.
Otherwise, I like the look of the watch and get compliments often.
The compass function works well, though I wouldn't want to rely on it in an emergency.
The display is somewhat difficult to see in poor light.
Would buy again if not for the leak. As it is, I am deeply disappointed.
One of the main draws for me was the design, I absolutely love the color scheme and the negative display but be aware, as cool as it looks, the negative display isn’t always visible depending on the light you are in (see attached images)…but to be honest, I like that all of the displays are not front and center every time I look at the watch. I don’t need to see everything, all at once, all the time… it makes the display too busy for me.. In almost every circumstance, those displays have been readable so it hasn’t been an issue. Additionally, the windows that have the negative display contain Secondary Information… like the Day/Date/ 24 Hour Time/Compass/Temperature… so 95% of the time, I don’t need to see the Day and Date every time I look at the watch (though I almost always do see it)
Once you know the day and date, you know for the rest of the day.. it’s not going to change…and if you like using the 24 Hour Clock, you already know how to calculate the time just looking at the analog hands, so you don’t need the display read out…same goes for the other read outs.. How often will you need to know your Compass Bearing in Degrees (the second hand points north so you don’t need the display) and the Temperature gauge only gives you an accurate reading when it’s off your wrist (your body heat affects the read out) so the fact that those windows might not always be visible, is a non-issue for me but if it will bug you, get one of the other models. For me the gray background on the positive display just reeks of “cheap digital” while the negative display is so much sleeker and this model also has the 5-Minute markers blacked out for added stealth… just plain cool
I absolutely love this watch. In my opinion, the best looking G-Shock ever made.
PROS: Great looking / Rugged / Light-weight / Comfortable / Easy-to-Read Analog Hands / Large Buttons for easy access / Cool Features (Alarms/Compass/Temperature Gauge/24Hr Clock/Countdown Time/Stopwatch/World Time/Dial Light) / PRICE-Originally released at $320 but got it for $200
Possible CONS: Negative display not always visible / Alarm Beep could be louder (I can’t aways hear it) / Temperature gauge only gives you an accurate reading when it’s off your wrist (your body heat affects the read out) / Being a combo Analog-Digital, the hands sometimes cover up the digital windows and obscure the Day/Date / Learning curve setting it up (wasn’t familiar with digital watches) but found a Youtube video that explained it all very easily
Overall, I love this watch and give it Four Stars but can see where others might be put off by some of the possible Cons.
Good- durability, aesthetic. Bad - Functionality, design
Like I said in my original review, I liked the look of this watch - that and its other features made it the one I chose 7 months ago. That said, I would not buy it again knowing what I know now. Worst of all - its LCD. There have been too many times where I cannot read the LCD display. Many times I've wanted the stopwatch or timer display but could not read it at all. The only feature of this watch that is reliable is the watch hands. (For me) this watch REQUIRES the user manual to make changes, like daylight savings time. So if you don't have an interweb connection, you're kinda screwed. At this very moment the time of day is 2:41 PM, but my watch reads 7:41pm - and that's reading the watch hands, not the LCD. The LCD is unreadable and I'm indoors.
Original review -
I ended up buying this model after looking at it plus a few other G-Shocks because I liked the feature set of this one and I liked the looks of this one the best over-all. I like it very much, but I wish I had bought the version with the lighter color LCD with black numbers because the LCD on this version is kind of hard to read. Other than that I like it very much.
Its built like a tank. Atomic is nice, but I don't have to have it. I set the time by the atomic clock, and since it's a Casio Japanese quartz, I don't expect to lose more than a couple of seconds per year. Solar is great, and my personal opinion is that Casio should have at least put it in this model. They did not, and like atomic time keeping, I don't HAVE to have it. The battery life is rated for 2 years. I've got a battery powered G Shock that I've had for 15 years on the same 3-year battery, and it's still working. In any event, a battery change takes 10 minutes out of my life if it ever comes to that.
The negative reviews scared me because my fear was that some of the Chinese clones made it into Amazon's rotation. I did my research and found that some of the knock-offs look almost exactly like the genuine article, but the durability, water resistance and function are far inferior.
My watch came from the Watch Company of NY. It came in a sealed G Shock box with an owners manual, warranty card and factory price tag with all of the model numbers correct and consistent. I inspected the watch very carefully, looking for any signs of a fake. This is the genuine article, and it works flawlessly. I would have returned it immediately if not...
The GWG model is superior, but this is still a great watch and it is way more affordable.
Amazon has NEVER sold me a fake. I suppose it could happen, but I have confidence that Amazon does not condone it.
I like the watch. I think you will too. I have not experienced any of the problems others have on the negative reviews, and I hope I don't.
This is my first Casio and I picked a winner. But be prepared. The owner's instruction manual is very tiny and I needed a magnifying glass just to see all the detail. Setting up the time on this watch is not intuitive. While it should be simple it ended up being a quite complicated process. The myriad other functions available on this watch will just have to take a vacation since the time is all that's important to me.
Please remember that the term "water resistance" means that you can not submerge the watch under water for any length of time. You will notice that the product page says "in general, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not diving". The optimal words here are 'surface' and 'not diving'.
If you're looking for an impressive time piece that will be able to take a lot of punishment, this could be your watch. Take it from me, it looks even better on your wrist.
