I had initially considered sending these shirts back because they had some shrinkage, but I have decided to keep them. I really wanted to find a way to make it work. Before laundering, the shirts were a little big on me (but I liked it that way).
Despite the shrinkage, the sleeves are not too short. The sleeves actually shrunk to just the right length for me. The length of the shirt did shrink, but as long as it doesn't shrink anymore it will be okay. I washed them again (on cold), put them in the dryer (on low heat) for about 2 minutes, then stretched them after I hung them up to air dry. This has definitely helped. I love the princess seams which gives it a more feminine cut, and the colors are great and the fabric is SO warm. Way to warm to wear in 60 degree weather. I'm keeping them and happy overall, I just wouldn't recommend fully drying them in the dryer unless they are very long on you and you want a fair amount of shrinkage in the length. Upgrading to 4 stars.
I checked the directions for laundering and didn't find any, but noticed a HUGE amount of cotton fabric. I put it through the washer in cold water. Hit the dryer on a gentle low and found my plaid shirt had shrunk by at least 1/2 a size. The colors hadn't faded, but no room to layer properly and the sleeve length is now to short or just above the wrist. Since this shirt is made of a heavy material, I could wear it alone and roll up the sleeves without a problem. However, I'm feeling a little restricted in the shirt and have other coordinating shirts from Carhartt to wear with it. Just not what I intended.
Be careful when you first launder and take special care the first few times you wash and dry. I purchased the same shirt (different print) for my daughter and we washed cold, hung dry, cool iron (first 2 times) then washed cold, air dry, no iron. Stretch out the fabric and hang it somewhere warm. No shrinkage at all. Two months later and her shirt looks like it just came out of the package. Perhaps, if my daughter weren't so darn small, she could just have mine! Off to launder and shrink my plaid shirt some more! Great shirt on other aspects😄!
[Edited 4/8/16]: Changed to 3 stars because the shirt I ordered last year was perfect; this year I ordered another, and the sleeves are about 1 inch too short leaving my wrists exposed to the cold. Obviously fabricated in a different house and QC not up to what I expect from Carhartt. Also, it IS shorter than shown on the model but okay here because I'm short waisted.
Washes well. I didn't notice any shrinkage. The length is just right for me. I don't like long shirts. I am 5'8" and the shirt just hits my hip bones on the sides and then blouses down about 4" front and back. Very complementary to most women's bodies.
