Captive, 1st book in the beautiful monsters series was a bloody ripper of a read. I rarely read paranormal, for me, I find most to be lame, lacking plot and filled with gratuitous sex. Exceptions Ella Franks Alasdair, Isadora & Thane series, which were really great and a few others, such a TJKlune Wolfsong to name some more. This series, holyshit, it had everything, war, fighting, sex, betrayal, love, loss, desire, remorse, craving. The book seriously kicked major ass the longer the story unfolded. Our poor hero Matthew, unknowingly was an iccubus turned vampire at 32. Is captured by the High Lord General Tarrick and imprisoned. He soon realises his life is not his own anymore. Christ he's doing it tough mixing it with a race that doesn't trust or like him, unless he's fighting for them. Which he does as no one has ever before and with a dedicated, yet troubled strength and sense of loyalty that isn't cherished enough. He suffers constant distrust and ultimately heart wrenching betrayal. You seriously want to hug him, then unleash him. He's a force to be reckoned with. If you want a book that's going to have you sitting up all night reading it then read this one. I'm off to read book two, it seriously is that good.

A book that has sensitive topics, it's definitely not for the faint of heart but oh boy is it good. Once you're hooked, you just can't put it down. Highly recommend

This is certainly a fantastical adventure book but not so much a romance one. This book focuses on Matthew, the main character, and his journey towards self enlightenment which is one big roller coaster ride. Jex Lane weaves a complicated, exciting, bloodthirsty, and action packed tale about two opposing species, Vampires and Incubi. Matthew happens to be both and gets caught up in a war he has no interest in, being used as a weapon against his will. His Master, Tarrick, is cruel, demanding, and ruthless, and treats Matthew with little kindness. Even the sex between them is rough and callous, no hearts and flowers here. This doesn't detract from the story at all but it's why I say this book is not really a romance. This book is very well written with few if any typo's. If you like a gritty, hard, battle field type story where the hero is unappreciated and abused then this book is a must. Again not really romantic but definitely full of engaging characters that you will either love or hate. Well worth the read and looking forward to the next instalment.

This is a hard book to review. It's very, VERY gory, dark and angsty, and touches on the issue of non-consent in a few places, though mostly effecting minor characters. That's to be expected, though, given that the story involves incubi. I liked the concept of a war between two supernatural groups, vampires and incubi. I liked the descriptions of the incubi. I liked the hunters and the way they can be so different, reflecting their origins in different times and places. I liked the politicking. I liked the vivid imagery.

However, I’m undecided as to whether or not I will give the next book a try, as there was a LOT in this one that didn’t work for me.

This isn’t a gripping page turner. It has consistent problems with the story dragging in places - including the very beginning of the book! The author tried to make the meeting between Mathew and Tarrick stand in place of a hook. It didn't work for me and I was bored and contemplating giving up. I managed to plod my way through to the first sex scene and the book actually started getting better. I thought that maybe it was just one of those books that takes a while to get into. Going forward, however, I realised that I was on a roller coaster of inconsistent quality - It felt like the author put a lot of effort into sex and battle scenes (mostly), and there are lots of those, but didn’t put the same effort into the bits that weren’t battle or sex.

Part of the reason I kept getting bored is that the characters aren’t well fleshed out. I can’t be invested in incomplete characters, and if I’m not invested I don’t get that ‘oh no! What’s going to happen to them?’ feeling that makes you race through the pages and not be able to put the book down. Mathew, the main character, sort of waffles around.

This book was so intense it has a lot of gore and death as well as fear mixed with the pleasure and yearned for security. I loved the trails that Matthew went through and his relationship in regards to Tarrick. It Is a different type of romance by lots of means and you have to stay open to it. It certainty keeps you on your toes. Their unconventional attraction to each other was what made everything seem so forbidden and appealing. The plot was just so well done. I'm really hoping to see the next book out soon. It's a definite recommend
