Product Description

Kate is a woman on the run. After years of being physically and emotionally abused by her fiance, she's finally had enough. But leaving might be even more dangerous than staying, so she needs to get as far away as she can as fast as possible. A late night, desperate drive through the pouring rain ends suddenly when a cat appears in the middle of the road. While trying to avoid the half-drowned creature, Kate loses control of her car and crashes through a portal to Fairie.
Ankou is a fallen God of Death and the king of the Winter Court of Fairie, and he's facing pressure from every direction. The magic of the Court is out of balance due to the centuries-long lack of a queen. He is harried constantly by the Court nobles who want him to either step down or take a mate. All the duties of a ruling pair rest squarely on his shoulders. And added to all this is a soul-crushing loneliness. His existence stretches back hundreds of millennia, and in all that time he has never found the one person who could warm his lonely heart. He is exhausted and discouraged, and the last thing he needs is to go tearing off into the night on a fool's errand. But one of his lingering god powers is the ability to sense the right course of action to follow, and his instincts are screaming at him to go to a particular place in the forest of the Winter kingdom and wait. Imagine his surprise when he finds the one he has been waiting for his whole life!
Using a careful blend of patience, seduction, and domination, the Winter king tries to win his soulmate's love. Feeling safe and valued for the first time in her memory, Kate explores her new freedom by agreeing to try the BDSM games her lover suggests. As she experiments with both domination and submission, she learns just how liberating surrender can be. Will Ankou be able to convince Kate that she can trust him with her feelings as well as her body? Will Kate find a way to overcome the trauma of her past and open up her heart to accept the love that is offered to her? Can these two broken people find a way to fit all their disparate pieces together into a stronger, united whole? You'll have to read to find out!

This is my favorite of the books in the Spellbound Hearts series by Ms. Dawn. As with the others, there are fascinating descriptions of Fairy that enhance the story, but the emphasis is on Ankou and Kate.

Leaving her abusive fiance on a rainy night, Kate crashes to avoid hitting a cat, catapulting her into the land of Fairy where she is rescued by Ankou, King of the Winter Court. Recognizing her immediately as his anamchara or soulmate, he patiently gains her confidence. Ankou seeks a Queen to help rule his kingdom. Will Kate become what he needs? What dangers will she face as she gains confidence under his growing attentions?

This book contains sexual situations of a specific nature, intended for mature audiences only. I found these to be handled with thought and caring, definitely broadening my knowledge. There are insights into the thoughts of each character, allowing the reader to fully understand them and their motivations. Well done. 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivated by the story in this one! 26 March 2016

A steamy romance with an actual plot, good character development, and a wonderful fantasy setting? I don't normally read books with this much heat, mainly because I want an actual story to go with the romance. I was not disappointed in this one. The author takes the time to introduce Kate and Ankou to us, revealing their inner thoughts as well as their hopes and dreams. I loved the Fae court intrigue, the wonderful side characters, and the suspense leading to the conclusion I hoped I would find at the end. I even loved the cat! Read this one, it is fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved the best for last 1 December 2015

Format: Kindle Edition
This is the story of how Kate and Ankou meet and fall in love. Kate is a human running from an abusive relationship when she accidentally passes through a portal into Fairie. Ankou, a fallen god and the king of the Winter Court of Fairie, is there waiting for her to arrive, even though he doesn't know that at the time. What follows is the tale of how Kate learns to trust Ankou while also exploring the erotic secrets waiting in the world of BDSM. On the flip side, it is also the tale of how Ankou helps Kate overcome all of the trauma from her old life to become the strong and self-assured queen that he needs by his side.

Full disclosure! I worked as an editor on this story. This is the third book in Mistral Dawn's Spellbound Hearts series, and in my opinion, it is by far the best of the three. Her writing style has grown and evolved with practice and time. As I was reading this book the first time (as an editor I have made multiple passes over these pages) I was gripped by the feeling that this was the story Ms. Dawn has wanted to write all along. The characters feel more real and honest, the story more fun and exciting, and the underlying message more compelling. It is not often that I am fortunate enough to find a book that leaves me dreading the end because I know I will miss being witness to the characters' lives, but this book fit that bill.

You do not have to read the first two books in this series to enjoy this book, and I highly recommend it. There are plenty of warnings about possible triggers, so I will not repeat them here.
