Let me get the biggest negative out of the way: COLOUR:
As with any printer, i'm really critical of printer colour production. When I print serious photos (from my own photography) i ensure my monitor is calibrated, my printer is calibrated for the paper type. I have it down to a science in my setup however, with these "fun" quick print units such as Canon selphy and this Canon "zink" paper ivy printers, colour is expected to be poor at best because it really wasn't meant to print high quality colour accurate prints. I believe the target audience doesn't and really *shouldn't* care about the colour accuracy much.
These types of printers are meant for "photobooth" instant fun, so we must not be too critical about it. Having said that, I'm afraid to point out that this Canon ivy printer with "zink" paper, is fairly poor with respect to colour -- even my Canon selphy can do much better than this ivy printer. All my photos from my phone come out full and lifeless with a green tint to every shot out of the box. You can see what i mean by looking at my screenshot compared to my print.
You have to know this and always adjust the photo in order to get decent colour prints from it. But once again, lets not be too critical! [small tip: if your phone has a display setting to adjust your phone's colour vividness, then it is best to make it the most "dull" setting first, then edit the picture on your phone, and then print --- phones such as samsung s8 and pixel2 default to a bolder "vivid" colour boost setting by default] --- If you REALLY want to get fancy you could tweak this thing to get mildly acceptable colour accuracy on the paper but honestly this ruins the whole fun of it.
Now, in my humble opinion, this printer HAS TO BE fun, simple to use, and QUICK and fairly priced for refill "zink" paper. Otherwise, there is no point to have such a product.
The printer itself, without much tweaking, is just fine for anyone who just wants a memory-sake print out. At a day and age where nobody prints pictures anymore, I really love these kinds of products that bring back the prints. It is REALLY easy to connect, pick a photo, and just edit on the spot with various filters, colour adjustments, adding virtual goods like emojis and text and freehand drawings. Basically the Canon Mini print app feels like instagram where you pic a shot, go thru the editing, and instead of "sharing" to the instagram cloud, you press the print button and it spits out a 2x3 photo in a few seconds. The output is fast, quiet and FUN.
2. Quickness and refill pricing:
As mentioned, the unit uses "zink" paper and prints out quickly and dry instantly to touch. At about 56 cents per 2x3 print, it is not cheap but not too expensive either. I presume the price per print may vary depending on the deals at bulk. But again, at an age where nobody prints pictures anymore, I think this is a fair price for the novelty.
3. The Fun:
If you can see my pictures, the printer and prints are really small. Fits on your hand. The 2x3 hits the spot for "photobooth" fun. My kids LOVE this size because its pocketable, pinnable on their walls, and just fun memory-sake size. You could get carried away initially and print too many but as the initial novelty wears out, you will print only shots you love. I really love that its so small, and portable. Easy to carry in the vacation bag and uses micro usb to charge, so its readily available to charge anywhere. I think the portability makes it more useful than my Canon Selphy printer and I think i will use more of this Canon ivy than the selphy for that reason -- despite the inferior colour accuracy.
I have to point out one last thing: price. the printer isnt cheap. 140$ in my humble opinion is just a bit too high. I would love to see this printer at 50$ and Canon make up the cost with the adoption of people buying "zink" paper. You can get a Canon Selphy for around 120$!
I conclude the review by giving it 4 stars because its a super fun toy for yourself and kids. It encourages printing of your phone pictures because its is super simple to use and has fun editing features on the well-made app. I knock off 1 star due to price of printer itself, and I thought canon shouldve done a better job with default colour calibration for popular phones displays.
- Very portable because of its light weight and small footprint (pic of my iPhone 8 Plus and the IVY printer)
- No ink necessary, just needs the photo paper refills!
- Super easy set up and installation, simply connect via Bluetooth and then add the printer in the Canon Mini Print app
- Fast printing from the app to the printer (prints 1 photo in about 25 seconds)
- Fully charges in 75 minutes
- Mini Print iOS app is awesome and basically a full photo editor, you can do all kinds of effects and manipulations on photos taken all for free (this is my new go to app for photo effects)
- Just all around fun to be able to share physical memories with family and friends on the spot
- I wish the printer could hold more than 10 sheets as you go through them pretty quick
- If possible faster printing time but for this small of a printer, it’s hard to beat
The Bottom Line:
Wow, rarely do I see a new product that is as well thought out as this printer and associated app. I have an Instax camera and while that’s fun, this printer and associated app blows it out of the water. The big difference between the Instax and this Canon printer+app is the ability to take a photo and add after effects on my own phone and then print the photo instantly on the printer. The 2 problems I have with the Instax camera was I couldn’t center the subject easily and also had trouble with the lighting exposure. I ended up wasting a lot of photo sheets trying to get it right with the Instax camera. However, with the Canon Mini Print app, I can see the photo and add text or other effects and then print the photo. This saves a lot of wasted photo sheets. The set up of the Canon IVY printer is super easy in that it just connects via Bluetooth and installing the photo paper just involves popping off the top and dropping in the photo packet (pics attached to review). The speed of the printer for this size is quite good at 25 seconds (video attached). Being rechargeable, light weight and small, it’s great to take anywhere and just throw in your backpack or purse and have the ability to print photos for people as instant mementos. Overall this is a fully baked out device and app and a ton of fun to use and share memories, highly recommended!

But overall I’m very impressed with the colour quality of the canon Ivy
The printer arrived quickly and in perfect condition so no gripes at all there.
In the box there is a USB charging cable, the printer and some printing paper. We also purchased an additional 50 printer pages. You can get there with a stick back or without depending on how you want to use it.
The printer did come with some battery life in it but unfortunately not enough to pair with my phone so off to charge it I went. Luckily I have a lot of USB charging blocks but if you don’t you will have to charge it via a computer or buy one. The printer charged within a couple of hours and was ready to go.
The app to use the printer was small and downloaded on to my phone quickly. Once installed it is fairly intuitive on how to get it to work.
Print quality for such a small inkless printer was impressive, the only time that this wasn’t the case was when the battery started to run low. There was some playing around with the brightness of certain pictures so again I would recommend buying additional paper.
Overall I really love this printer. It’s never going to replace an actual printer or going out and having prints made but for little gifts for inside cards or small framed pictures it’s amazing.
Would definitely buy as a gift or to get another if mine were to wear out.
Con: Color is not what you see on you phone, has yellow/greenish tint to it. Need to adjust color to be brighter to get better printer color. Battery lasts only about 10 prints.
Overall: still happy with my purchase because it’s very convenient and once I know how to adjust the color and the brightness, most photos turn out very well.
