2.0 out of 5 stars Good concept, poor execution and bad attitude by Canon

What a journey with this specimen!

it started almost a year ago when I first ordered it. On paper it sounds ideal wideangle zoom for photoenthusiast - wide, sharp, fast, stabilized etc, but unfortunately the path I experienced was quite exhausting. For context, I have been photographing semi-professionally with DSLR (currently using EOS R) from 2004 and previously owned wide angle zooms like EF16-35 F2.8 L, EF16-35 F4 IS L and also briefly got hands on on EF16-35 F2.8 MKIII.

Back to the story. First copy I got, went back to Amazon after couple of weeks testing, was too soft at near the edges. Second copy I received was even worse. And then I made the biggest mistake, instead of sending the lens back to Amazon for another replacement, I sent to official Canon Service for calibration. As a CPS platinum member, I should have been serviced in 2-3 days, it got 3 weeks and lens test result regarding to service were that everything is ok.

Good! So, I went out testing again and found that something strange is going on, perfectly sharp in center, but same blurry edges. Talked with service, send them test photos and went to the second service round. Another 3-4 weeks without lens, got it back and .. same story. Service guy saying he is not able to produce similar result in the lab as I got in my testing sessions and all he can say is that lens is ok and there is nothing to do. For €2500 (incl VAT) Canon wide angle lens you expect corner to corner consistently sharp result, nothing less. In other words, I got mediocre copy of "16-35 F4 IS" for that money. Can't be happy with that.

So. Third round. Went to another official Canon service and these guys detected quite quickly, that there are sharpness issues with this lens, but ... previous service has been mishandled the lens and thats why they can't take the responsibility of it and do any fixing, it need to be send to next higher up level Canon Service. Ok, let's do that. Another month without the lens, got it back, nothing changed and service saying that lens meeting all the requirements! C'mon! Real life test photos telling clearly different story, there is no need to be an expert to see that one part of the picture is remarkably softer than other, this not some €150 lens we talking about.

Forth round, more than month in "higher level service", same result. Luckily my local dealer gave me their rental lens (15-35) so I wasn't all the time without any wide angle. Then was the moment I got opportunity to push my case to some sort of head executive person who asked to send the lens back (for fifth time) again and he personally will deal with the case. Finally. No. Another more than month waiting and again in same dead point, lab test saying there is no issues with the lens.

Unfortunately lab test does not make customers feel better if real life results clearly showning sharpness issues. And again, asking €2500 for the 15-35 F2.8, it has to be better than it's older and much cheaper preccedors.

And that's how the story ended, almost a year later, no repalcement or fixing from Canon side.

Suggestion, buying this lens and have a sharp copy, go to local store and testi it out before buying.

PS. Luckily Amazon saved the story (for me) when I did not have any hope, they understood that Canon didn't and replaced the lens even if the return period had expired. New copy, not ideal, but definetly better!

Also attached one of the testphotos, you have to check it on 100% zoom (I hope its not compressed or resized by amazon upload system).
