Product Description

Quickly get up to speed with TechSmith Camtasia Studio 8.5 using this easy-to-follow quick start workbook. Learn how to create and edit screencasts, add voice narration, create animations, insert transitions between clips, add callouts and captions, capture webcam input, add a table of contents, quiz or survey, capture PowerPoint presentations, plus much more.

All of the projects in this book are based on a real online application and are presented using a friendly tutorial style approach, gently introducing you to the powerful features of the Camtasia Studio suite of software products. A separate website contains all the book's sample videos and associated project files, freely available for download.

The idea of the book isn't to simply run through the menu options and commands available with Camtasia Studio, but rather to provide you with worked examples that show you how to perform tasks with the software.

The best way to learn how to use any software application is to do just that – use it. Reading about it helps, but you need to use it in order to quickly build up your skill level and proficiency with the software. That's why this book takes a very “hands on” practical approach to learning how to use Camtasia Studio effectively; have the book open on your tablet while using the software on your PC or laptop at the same time.

Who this Book is for

This book assumes that you are new to the enjoyable art of using Camtasia Studio to create videos; perhaps you have just been tasked by your manager at work to create a video that presents your company's latest software product, or maybe you want to start your own YouTube channel and have been told that Camtasia Studio is a great application to enable you to do this … which it is. Or perhaps you've just downloaded a trial version of the software and you want to get up to speed quickly with it to see what its capabilities are before you buy the software.

Whatever your reason is for needing to create videos with Camtasia Studio, this book will help you.

The Accompanying Website

To help you to get the most out of this book, there is an accompanying website that contains the video clips that are introduced throughout the book. As well as being able to view the videos on the website, you can download the associated Camtasia Studio project files so you can use, modify, and generally play around with the video clips yourself to see how they work and the effect of making changes to them. Links to the downloadable files are included at the end of each chapter.

The Software Application

To make the whole experience of working through this book more “real”, all of the projects use an actual software application as the subject for the videos.

The Quick Start Workbook YouTube Channel

All the sample videos and video tutorials that correspond to this quick start workbook are available on the Quick Start Workbook YouTube channel.

A Bit About Camtasia Studio

Camtasia Studio is a software suite for Microsoft Windows that basically enables you to create videos by recording computer screen output and/or by importing media files into a Camtasia project. The software is created and published by TechSmith.

There are two main components to Camtasia Studio: Camtasia Recorder which, as name suggests, allows you to record your computer's screen, and Camtasia Editor, which enables you to edit your video(s).

A typical Camtasia Studio video will be made up of several tracks layered on top of each other, with each track containing content for your video, for example, a screen recording, background music, voice narration, and callouts, all set against a timeline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, I now have a solid working relationship with my Camtasia software. 12 March 2015
By Kat Sturtz - Published on Amazon.com

Thanks to John Dixon and his easy to read and follow instructions I now have a solid working relationship with my Camtasia software. I definitely was making things much harder than they needed to be. So much so that I actually owned Camtasia for several years (even updating it!) before I really got a handle on using it.

In addition to the workbook itself, I really appreciated the related extras available on his website via URLs listed in his book. Helped straighten out my learning curve by providing examples and resources to practice with. No fears about screwing something up of my own.

I'm still a Camtasia user newbie. But I'm no longer wet-behind-the-ears!
5.0 out of 5 stars A Great and Useful Book with Excellent Design Projects for Video Development 19 July 2015
By Alexis Aronis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The book “Camtasia Studio 8.5 Quick Start Workbook” Kindle Edition by John Dixon constitutes precisely a Great and Useful Book with Excellent Design Projects for Video Development.
As the author writes, this book helps the reader: “to design and create effective and interesting videos using TechSmith Camtasia Studio 8. x.” It has a short ‘Preface’ and a very informative and useful section ‘About this Book’. Also, the book has the section ‘Contents’ (14 Chapters) and at the end has the informative section ‘Appendix’.
For anyone who knows even superficially some of the applications of Editing and Production of Video, it is clear that this book is really useful to the user.
It is worth noting the selection and the treatment of some well-designed chapters of the book, which are of great importance to training and to teaching of Software (Video) Design, such as:
- Chapter 1 Thinking About Your Project Before You Dive In
- Chapter 5 Adding Callouts to Your Video
- Chapter 6 Using Animations
- Chapter 7 Capturing Video from Your Webcam
- Chapter 11 Adding a Quiz or Survey to a Camtasia Studio Video
Beyond the values that have the chapters themselves, it is worth stressing the importance and the well strategically placement of the following essential supporting items:
- Tips …
- Notes …
- Resources …
A great and intelligent work of the author is the section 'The Website', which 'contains the video clips that are introduced throughout the book'. The importance of this section, is condensed in the formulation of the author: "As well as being able to view the videos on the website, you can download the associated Camtasia Studio project files so you can use, modify, and generally play around with the video clips yourself to see how they work and the effect of making changes to them."
Although the author of the book John Dixon - at least as evidenced by his biography presented by himself in the section ‘About Me’ - has not dealt with education and training, however there is an own wording, which could form the essence of an example of 'Best Practice' in the field of Software (Video) Design and Development. For this reason (also), it is worth to consider the book an excellent 'Handbook' and a great 'Guide'. A brief analysis of this formulation refers to the known concepts in education:
- Active Learning
- Learning-by-Doing
- Learning-by-Making
- Worked-Out Examples
That wording is presented below, exactly as formulated in the book, leaving the reader to pull himself the expected conclusions: “The best way to learn how to use any software application is to do just that – use it. Reading about it helps, but you need to use it in order to quickly build up your skill level and proficiency with the software. That's why this book takes a very “hands on” practical approach to learning how to use Camtasia Studio effectively; have the book open on your Kindle Fire while using the software on your PC or laptop at the same time.”
The overall conclusion of the review for this book is that it is a useful, functional, helpful and comprehensive handbook, addressed mainly to the users of Camtasia Studio. This book really stands out on the seriousness and responsibility with which the author treats his readers and guides them through the rich book material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Virtual applause 11 January 2015
By Ricky D. Stone - Published on Amazon.com

John does an excellent job of leading the totally unseasoned user from the middle of the bewildering forest to feeling confident and being productive with the Camtasia Studio application.

Lots of screen captures to keep the user well grounded and know where they should be in the application and just the right mix of information and flow.

Overall, very well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for someone who wants to come up to speed quickly on Camtasia studio 8. 8 June 2015
By Charles42 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This is a great book for someone who wants to come up to speed quickly on Camtasia studio 8. It is well written, has plenty of examples you can use to make sure that you see what the author intended for you to see and the content flows nicely.

It includes many tips that make your work better and easier that you would otherwise have to dig around to discover.

I would definitely recommend this book.
