Beware: It’s metal, and some kids (not mine) are f’ing evil and will throw a water bottle at your toes. This and all other metal bottles will hurt like hell if they are thrown at you.
Update: have two of these in rotation: one for preK and one for around the house. Best water bottle we’ve ever used. Kiddo loves them too.
In my quest to find the right stainless steel bottle some brands that i have tried are :
contigo autospout - looks great, its stainless steel but the spout is super hard to drink from, especially for little kids. And the spout is hard, not soft and squishy like the camelBak one. Also I found it harder to clean the spout.
thermos- good bottle but has a straw not a spout. Harder to clean, especially the bending part in the straw.
kleen kanteen - good bottle but again the spout part is different, there is no straw; the kids have to tilt the bottle upwards to drink from it. good for older kids but my younger (2y) didn't like it.
Overall, Highly recommend this camelBak bottle, i have thrown all the other bottles away.
You have to cut them to size, and I boiled them before use. But they pass the pinch test and fit the bottle! No more plastic!
Also, the plastic straws are not too short like others have suggested. If you hold them to the outside of the container they look short. But once you place them inside they reach the bottom. See pictures. It’s insulated so that’s why the inside is a little smaller. I even placed a tiny amount of water in the bottle to test it out, and I was able to drink it all.
Wow!! This insulated bottle is remarkably effective at keeping contents cold! I filled the bottle with ice, added water, and packed it in the diaper bag for a trip to the park on a hot day. I was pleasantly surprised a couple of hours later to hear so much ice still clattering about in the bottle. Fast-forward to 12 hours later and there was still ice left in the bottle!! I was pretty shocked, but wanted to really put it to the test, so I left the bottle overnight to see if the water would be cold in the morning.
TWENTY hours later, the water was still cold!!! The ice had all melted, but the water was nice and cold. I’m sold, and will forever be a Camelbak fan.
That aside, I love how easily the straw and valve come apart for cleaning. Stainless steel is a breeze to clean, and as long as you wash it each night and allow it to thoroughly dry, you’ll never need to worry about mildew/mold. I’m looking forward to using the bottle during our upcoming trip across the country.
Update after three months of use: this bottle is still going strong, despite having several dings due to my toddler’s favorite activity of dropping things and watching them fall. The drops have not affected the bottle’s performance one bit. The bite valve is still intact and good as the day we started using the bottle. Cleaning continues to be easy and we have no issues with mold because we take apart every component and wash/air-dry every single night. Sometimes when I read comments by others regarding mold in bottles, I wonder if it’s due to lack of cleaning everything thoroughly or lack of doing so on a daily basis.
