5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifying! 29 June 2016

My experience is based on the audio book.

I am a fan of this series. It has many elements that make it complex and well written. This story is told through the psychopath of Evan. It was extremely disturbing to be put in his mindset. It gave me the chills and nightmares. I loved it. It was disturbing and completely crazy. Evan is a great main character because of how twisted his mind is. I feel it gives you a glimpse of a mind of a serial killer. My favorite part was the very end. I was clapping and hollering at work while listening. I think my coworkers might think I am crazy. An element of the book is astrology. I thought that was a unique twist and added a more developed plot. I would recommend this series to my thriller loving friends who aren't afraid of some gruesome realities.

My audio experience was fantastic. The narrator added such passion behind each word that I was blown away. I quickly became entranced with his voice and the emotions behind it. I was pleasantly surprised how well he did. I plan on following this narrators career because it is going to be great. I will listen to him again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bone-chilling thriller! 15 November 2015

From page one this novel churns with a storm of suspense and psychotic behavior of the villain. The Calm Before the Storm is the perfect concoction of thrilling reading for fans of Elle Klass and aficionados of the suspense, thriller, horror genres.

The author has hit the target with this novel. Her characters are full dimension and some are full of mischief, fueling the plot from beginning to end. The author handles well the unfolding story as it moves from setting to setting. And tension remains tight between the protagonist and the villain throughout the novel.

I like how Klass foreshadows portions of her story through the use of surrounding natural elements. Weaving environment with plot requires an author’s special touch, and Klass executes with precision. In doing so, her characters are challenged in additional ways which make her book even more exciting for the reader.

In addition I found the touches of dark humor, and the protagonist’s romantic involvement to be an extra accent of spice, adding balance to the story. However, be prepared for a suspense thriller soaked with the horrors of the antagonist’s twisted behaviors. Yes, your spine will know what I mean!

For me, The Calm Before the Storm, is Elle Klass’s best work yet! Five stars!
5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful In Every Way 15 November 2015

The second installment in Elle Klass' Ruthless Storm Trilogy can only be described as compelling and masterful. The author weaves the development of Evan O'Connor's abusive childhood into a nuanced analysis of his psychopathic penchant for murder sprees in adulthood. Evan's insanity includes using astrological signs as well as meteorological events to plan and carry out the most gruesome acts of terror. It's up to detective Alice Burkhalder to discover who would feel motivated to commit murders during the course of a powerful hurricane. Deaths that, at first, appear to be the result of acts of nature in the town of Billows Hollow turn out to be chilling calling cards that have been left by the perpetrator. Don't miss the second book in this amazing series. Top notch writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing, emotionally disturbing, sad story. 23 June 2016
By Jennifer Powell - Published on
I loved this sequel or is it prequel to this series. The novel takes off running and is nearly non-stop action until the end. I enjoyed seeing the events that took place before book one through the eyes of the villain, as it gave me insight into his motivations. Not once do I see Evan as likeable character that I could sympathies with, but I like knowing what created such a monster. Seeing the world through his eyes was hard, but I think you need to know what happened to him to understand his behavior.

I'm not going to say too much more about the story because if I do, I'll start spoiling the story. Know this, you have to have a strong stomach to read this novel, but it is worth reading.

I did find the pacing of the story moved too fast in a number of places for me. I listened to this on audio, so if I was distracted for a second, I would have to rewind a bit to see when we shifted scenes in the story. I also found that in some chapters the narrator read too quickly adding to the rushed pace. He may have done so to follow the fast, action-packed flow of the story, but I did have to turn the speed down twice on my Audible app because I wasn't taking in the story as well as I should because of how quickly he spoke.

Overall it is an amazing, emotionally disturbing, sad story that you should definitely read if you've read the first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dawn of the Hurricane Killer? 15 November 2015
By Broadway Turk Superstar - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Calm Before The Storm by Elle Klass is a taut psychological thriller masterfully woven by one of indie lit’s most promising authors. Coming off her intriguing Baby Girl series, she presents us with the second episode of the Ruthless Storm Trilogy. The story of her newest heroine, Eilida, gives way to this harrowing chess match between a deranged serial killer and a dedicated police detective. Evan O’Conner’s insanity is developed during an abusive childhood taking him through the Windy Oaks Mental Facility. Along the way he becomes a follower of astrology and meteorology which become compasses throughout his campaign of terror. He arrives at the town of Billows Hollow where his latest attack puts Detective Alice Burkhalder on his trail.

A unique twist to this plot is how the killer uses hurricane activity as a cover for his crimes. Billows Hollow is in the path of Hurricane Chloe, and Evan times his latest atrocity to coincide with the impact of the storm on the community. Gala and Lilly are two of the survivors who are interviewed by Alice, and she realizes that many of the storm victims were not killed by natural causes. Author Klass proceeds to guide us along one of her fascinating sleuthing treks where we discover the history leading us to Evan and his demonic strategies. The story turns into a page-turner you won’t put down.

An added bonus is the astrological profiles at the end of the tale. Another of my favorite authors, sci-fi writer Marcha Fox, provides a professional profile of the characters that is the icing on this gourmet cake. This is something I haven’t seen before, but nothing Elle Klass does is ever predictable. Pick up a copy of Calm Before The Storm by Elle Klass and see for yourself.
