5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, FAST RESULTS AND TAKES ONLY 35 MINUTES (NOT 1 HOUR), ONCE YOU'VE LEARNED THE EXERCISES 15 January 2015

Fantastic and as others have agreed, works fast (or "fahst," to quote Ms. Pinkney's unusual faux Britishy accent; she was born in Alabama). I discovered this program 25 years ago when it was new on VHS. Of all the workouts I've tried, this is by far the quickest and most effective for tightening and toning the body. And the one I searched for in vain for years on DVD once we got rid of our VHS player. Finally it's here in all its 80s glory. Yes, the teacher (Callan Pinkney, whom dubs herself "an American original") can be unintentionally hilarious with her odd combination of haughtiness and sincerity, but that just adds to the fun. You WILL find yourself quoting her. But the bottom line (one of her favorite phrases) is that this program she invented DELIVERS. If you follow it (twice a week, three times max) and really master the moves, within a week or two you will feel as if your body is being sucked inward from within. All day long. You will be taut, toned and have much improved posture. The longer you do it, the more limber you'll become. She has advanced workouts, but I found this was all I ever needed. She spends a lot of time making sure you understand exactly how to do the exercises (as with all exercises proper form is crucial). They are all no-impact, deep muscle exercises. You won't get winded or break a sweat doing them, but that doesn't mean they aren't hard. Or effective. I'm a dude, by the way. Like most 14-year-old girls whose bodies have virtually changed overnight my daughter is always complaining about her thighs, butt, stomach, etc. I'm hoping she'll give this a shot. Would be fun to work out together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Callanetics for Fibromyalgia (my experience) 28 July 2014
By Jon and Lisa - Published on Amazon.com

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia over 10 years ago, and I've struggled to find an exercise for "toning" that did not hurt me. Callanetics is something I recommend highly. Definitely START SLOW, as you will feel your muscles ache much more than you think when you're doing the exercises. My doctor recommended starting with 1/3 to 1/2 the number of repetitions, and work up to more as I'm able.

I found that I am able to do Callanetics. I like that I can feel how my muscles have been worked - Abs, hamstrings, hips... There is even a great exercise for the skin on your neck! Interestingly, I felt like the video also provided a really nice stretch. And it even seems to have improved some of my pain. For example, I was having a lot of hamstring pains before I started doing this video. These are several exercises that do work the hamstrings. I did those exercise carefully, starting very slowly and often doing just the stretching piece. But after about 4 weeks, I noticed my pain had improved.

My doctor does Callanetics, too. She said that she's seen her patients who do something like Callanetics or Yoga do better as they get older. Instead of seeing more pain, they are able to stay mobile longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Callanetics fan! 11 February 2016

I recall one of my mothers friends telling her that this is the only "workout" she does. The woman always looked so thin and "long" to me growing up. In my teenage years I remember my mother buying Callanetics on DVD. I borrowed it once, didn't complete it because I found it silly and boring.

Fast forward, I'm now in my late twenties, a wife and a mother of a child a little over one and have tried A LOT of workouts! I'd always been thin and enjoyed exercise but after having a c-section I found it really hard to "bounce" back. I've have been working out 45-75 minutes a day and eating clean and just can't seem to shake the extra weight. I've had my thyroid tested, blood work done, you name it! I stummbled across Callanetics on Amazon and bought 3 of Callan Pinckneys DVDs. I did my first hour right after I received it, yesterday I did a second hour and though I'm sore today I really wanted to do it again today! I find it so peaceful and relaxing but I also can really feel each move! My legs are sore in places that have never been sore! I've been sitting up, tall and with great posture, which is something I've always struggled with! I feel GREAT after the hour is finished! I read so much about people saying that the "feel and look" different after one workout and wondered how that could even be possible... I just took my measurements and I am down a little over 11/2 inches on my waist, 1/2 inch of my hips and a smidgeon on my thighs! With doing only two workouts!

I definitely recommend trying this out! For any woman with back pains (I have all sorts of different issues with my back) or woman that have a hard time doing abs moves, planks or anything core related after a c-section (or just in general) I haven't had any pains or issues and actually feel better! I use to be head over heals for HIIT workouts (high intensity) but now I look forward to small movements and pulses with Callanetics!!

I just have one more thing to add! I also bought "am/pm Callanetics" and the one for hips, thighs, etc. I was really disappointed to see they were the exact same DVDs as this original. No different moves, just less reps. I was really bummed about that and will be sending them back. That aside, give this a try!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Back and knee friendly. Great for toning up fast. 28 September 2016

I bought this a set with Quick Callanetics, Super Callanetics, and the AM/PM Callanetics workout. As I stated in my reviews for the other products, I have been doing this workout on and off for about 10 years. It is very effective to tone and tighten up quickly. It's a good workout, and I always feel very calm and relaxed, yet energized afterwards. If you are unfamiliar with Callanetics, it is like a combination of yoga, pilates and dance stretches. I do break a sweat, and it takes a couple of months before I can do the whole thing without having to take breaks, but it is not as uncomfortable to do indoors as the treadmill or aerobics. I alternate this with walking in the park and gym workouts. Although I have the books and the VHS, it was time to get the DVDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's shockingly effective 9 March 2016

I bought the DVD last year in May on the strong recommendation of a good friend. She thought I'd like it because I like pilates.

Background: I’m “naturally” thin, but soft, and not very shapely. Now that I’m in my 30s that softness has started to sag too - not a pretty picture. I dislike most forms of exercise (and have tried almost all) and also don’t like the “athletic” look for myself. Settled on pilates as a somewhat enjoyable way to keep my weight stable (also something that started to change in my thirties). Took classes 2-3x a week for a few months about 4-5 years ago and then moved over to a DVD at home since then.

Enter Callanetics: Do the DVD 2-3 times (Summer 2015), but it’s just plain hard and hard to keep up and that’s demotivating, plus I was feeling super lazy at the time – let’s be honest. In early January (pants getting tighter by the day) I recall there was a book version of the Callanetics workout and feeling particularly demotivated to follow a DVD (any DVD) I pick up the book so I can try it out at my own pace and hopefully understand the movements a little better with more description.

The book did the trick for me. I much preferred working at my own pace, the program in the book was harder and I skipped some of the stuff at first and did less than 100 reps of certain moves, but by session 8 I was doing the whole program in the book (I’ve now learned it’s like the DVD – Super Callanetics). After 10 sessions following the book, actually after 8 (so that's 4 weeks), my body had started to change so dramatically that even my husband made a comment about how it was working (and he never makes comments like that).

Every part of me has firmed and shaped up (just finished session 13 yesterday). I not only see it, but feel it. This NEVER happened in YEARS of doing pilates! Only 13 sessions and I’m in better shape than I ever remember being in (even all the way back to high school when I wished I could reshape my legs to be more curvy and less straight and did all sorts of crazy calf exercises and lunges). It never happened till now. I’m sorta dumbfounded and really sorry I never heard of Callanetics till my 30s.

I’ll admit that now I kinda look forward to the routine because I’m anxious to see how much more I progress after 2/3/4+ months of this.

A few things worth noting:
- Try really hard to position your body in the right way – it’s hard with some of these moves (they aren’t intuitive), but keep trying or you won’t work the right area and won’t get the results you want (I learned this with a couple of the butt exercises)
- Get the book, it really helps explain stuff even if you follow the DVD
- And try not to focus on other people’s before and afters, just commit to 10 sessions and make your own evaluation

You won’t look perfect in 10 sessions, but 10 should change your body enough to prove this is like no other program out there.

Best of luck.
