Product Description

First there was Karen Ann Quinlan in the public eye, and then Nancy Cruzan’s and Terri Schiavo whose lives were exposed to the public view and the centers of attention in the right-to-life versus right-to-choose debate. All three women shared a common dilemma: comatose for an extended period of time with a prognosis that, if they were ever to be revived, they would be in a vegetative state for the rest of their natural lives. In all three cases, families have been torn apart as the public has openly debated, sometimes violently, what their individual fates should be while placing the family on opposite sides in what should be a very private decision. And what of the victims: with no voice of his or her own, who speaks for them?

Modern-day medicine has provided the means to prolong life indefinitely, given the absence of any progressive disease. Intravenous feeding and other means can sustain a life for years if not for an entire lifetime, but at a terrible financial cost and wrenching emotional agony on the part of the family. Lives have been permanently scarred if not ruined entirely as the opposing agendas of the medical and legal professions are played out in the public arena. There will never be an end to this debate, nor can there be.

COMA is a work of fiction, but it is also a warning of what can happen if you, the reader, do not prepare yourself for the unthinkable – for that which you can not anticipate. It can happen at any time, any place, alone or with a group of people by your side. And, when it does, who will speak for you?
