Product description

Product Description

Blake Weston is a smart, savvy, no BS New Yorker. Her husband, Ralph Marino, is a très James Bond ex-cop and head of security for a large international corporation.

When Blake buys a “Chanel” bag from a sidewalk vendor, her problems start—but don’t end—with a mugging. They escalate to encounters with an Emmy-obsessed war reporter with a humongo pair of 36 Double Ds, an iPhone-obsessed Afghan war lord with an itchy trigger finger, and a showdown in Shanghai with a beautiful woman who might—or might not—be deadly.

Meanwhile, Ralph is about to hit the Big Six O and he’s not happy about it. Not that Blake is exactly thrilled about the prospect, either. Especially now that she suspects Ralph might be cheating on her. Again.

At this tense time in their relationship, Blake and Ralph are forced by Ralph’s über-neurotic billionaire boss to work together to solve a murder—and save Ralph’s job.

THE CHANEL CAPER by Ruth Harris is a tale about a couple hitting their sixties with the fear and wit of a decades-old-marriage. When Blake is hired to work with her ex-cop, chauvinistic husband, to solve the problem of counterfeit CDs and DVDs that is causing the owner of the company to lose way too much money, sparks fly. The characters are hilarious, from the aging cooking show hostess who wears a red bra and insists on cooking complicated French dishes to Blake's best friend, who with two divorces and one death in her background, chooses to try a relationship with a woman whose lifestyle is meditation and Birkenstocks, not Julia's high end clothing, complete with make-up and manicures and pedicures. The cast of characters in this novel reminds me of the six-degrees of relationships, only with fewer degrees. What I like best about this novel is Blake's snarky asides and Harris' ability to put it all out there, politically correct or not, through a not-so-young character. Thank you, Ruth Harris.

The book started off okay and was pretty good in the first third, but became more convoluted and unbelievable and ridiculous as it progressed. It is supposed to be funny, but all I could see were twists and turns, unbelievable characters acting out of character in an effort to surprise and lead the reader down another unbelievable path. In effort to avoid predictable plotting, the author stretched so far as to made it ridiculous.

Loved it! One ex-cop who doesn’t want help solving a murder. One current wife whose help he needs to catch the killer. One couple meant for each other who fall in love all over again after decades of togetherness. Funny, exciting and very romantic. With an unforgettable cast of characters. A good time will be had by every reader.
3.0 out of 5 stars An okay read in between "real" adventure novels 13 July 2016

My heading said it all. This book was more of a romp thru a thriller action novel than something one can take seriously. As I read there was a lot of fantastical scenarios that in no world would ever / could ever happen. I also found the writing choppy which made getting into the main character's head a difficult thing to do.

I didn't enjoy it enough to make the effort to read any more of this author's books.
