***THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE PRODUCT BOUGHT ON AMAZON***
I had bought the smaller bag initially from Petco to transition my puppy from Purina to Canidae and that seemed to go well. So I ordered the bigger 24 lbs bag from Amazon. It came in a couple of days, was waiting eagerly for it as the smaller bag had finished and so as soon as it arrived I opened it and gave a scoop to my puppy for dinner. First thing I noticed is that the kibble was much larger and darker than the one I had bought from Petco. I was a bit suspicious but brushed it off. Later in the evening when I went back to the opened bag to transfer it to the food container, I WAS SHOCKED AND DISGUSTED TO FIND IT CRAWLING WITH BUGS (PICTURES ATTACHED)!!! AND I HAD ALREADY FED IT TO MY PUPPY! I was really worried for her but first I promptly dumped that bag after taking pictures and then called up Amazon. They were very nice about it and sent a replacement bag which arrived in another couple of days. No bugs this time but still the kibble size and color was the same like before (picture attached) and not like what I had bought from the Petco store (multiple times, same product, picture of bag from Petco attached).

SO MY QUESTION IS - WAS WHAT I BOUGHT FROM AMAZON A FAKE CANIDAE PRODUCT?
SELLER, MANUFACTURER, AMAZON, PLEASE CONFIRM!
Since we’ve got our puppy she has solely been eating Canidae for puppies. But recently we found that she wasn’t eating it anymore, she would even stop eating for a full day. We tried different foods but a full change in diet would upset her tummy and our pup would feel even worse. Then my wife kept on researching on the internet trying to figure out what was going on. She found in some reviews from another dog food brand pretty much the same story that we were living. The other people solved it by buying the same food they bought from Amazon from a local pet shop. So we decided to do the same. It was our surprise that she devoured her first plate of Canidae bought from a pet shop around the corner.
Maybe something weird happens at the Amazon warehouses or the product they receive is not the same. But our puppy felt it and got us all worried. Hope this is of help to any other customers that could be passing through the same situation.
Maybe it's just a different batch, but since there is barely a price difference I'll purchase this food from Petco from now on. I've attached photos of the food side by side, the Petco food on the left is a slightly lighter color and seems more "dense" (Amazon version has a lot of little holes in the kibbles).
Update: After feeding my dog the Petco food for a week, he hasn't had diarrhea once, where before it was usually at least "loose" once or twice a week. I do not reccommend buying this food on Amazon, however the real stuff from Petco has worked great for my dog so far.
Until just recently, we would drive almost an hour to the closest retailer. Now, I've found that Amazon can ship it. AMAZING!
I am a Dog Obedience Instructor, and have taken classes specializing in Nutrition. I have reviewed plenty of other dog foods and found that Canidae out beats most of them by a landslide.
I have found that the type of food you feed your pet greatly influences the way they act, the way their coat feels, and their overall health. Imagine that you lived in a diet based on mainly fast food, how do you think your body would react to that after years? Same thing with our pets. Alot of grocery store brand foods are full of junk.
Canidae is a great food. Main ingredient is meat.
They are also proud supporters of bully breeds. Which is the main reason we even gave them a try after winning a bag during a bull dog competition.
After extensive research, we decided to stick with it. My oldest dog is now 13 and in great health.
High quality is evident the minute you open the bag. After trying 5 other brands over the last 5 months, I am so excited to have found this from such a reputable company. The flavor we are currently using is: Limited ingredient Duck kibble (grain free). Please remember to check with your vet regarding the correct quantity to feed daily, as the quantity needed is sometimes less with high quality food, or depending on the age of your dog.
Thank you Amazon and Canidae!
I buy three or four flavors of this food to give her some variety. She loves them all.
This Canidae food is truly superior . Even the more abused and damaged dogs love this food . After a few months of the appropriate type of Canidae, the improvement in the health of the dog becomes noticeable . Their hair quality changes completely, becoming thick and shiny. Those dogs that were wounded, or dealing with the results of severe physical abuse, not only experience a very strong improvement in health, but their mental attitude improves remarkably.
I use several different types of Canidae, depending upon the age, and the health issues of each dog. All varieties of this food are fresh and superior. It is expensive food, but I have saved enormous amounts of Vet. money, purely through using the proper feeding methods on dogs in distress.
I highly recommend the use of Canidae dog food. Make certain that you feed the correct variety of food for the dog in question. Do not over-feed. This food is very well-composed, and will invariably improve the health of even my most abused dogs. I have never experienced the refusal of any dog to consume this food.
I also use the canned, wet, versions of Canidae for certain dogs. Again - a high-quality, and apparently extremely tasty dog food. I give many supplements, vitamins, and prescription drugs to the dogs, depending upon the particular need of each dog, and as recommended by my Vet.
This is a fine and consistently high-quality food, I recommend it highly.
Then in the last year we went to a new vet. Discussed the licking/chewing issue and she recommended that we switch her food off a chicken based kibble to duck. She explained many times it isn't that dogs need grain free (something we had her on) but rather they have an allergy to a protein found in chicken and turkey. Duck doesn't seem to create the same issue, so we thought why the heck not? It's worth a try, and it would be nice to not have her licking herself into infections and other trouble.
The DUCK version of this food has done the trick. No more licking, chewing, and we can even touch her ears without her yelping! No more benadryl, either. It's quite expensive, but it's worth not dealing with the issues from infections, etc. One caveat- we did switch over slowly and our dog did need to have a "bowel" adjustment. She initially had diarrhea when we introduced a little of this into her diet, but now that we've switched over 100% it has resolved.
I would definitely recommend the duck version of this food for dogs that have skin issues.
We love Canidae! I used to feed my dog the duck formula, but now that he’s older and his tummy is more sensitive we switched to lamb & pea. We only order on Amazon when they have a “real” deal though because this brand is more pricey when you own a 150# dog.
Update: After feeding this for a few days, several of my six got some diarrhea, one other very loose poo. Probably no fault of the food itself, but more the amount of flax or some other ingredient new to their system. Or at least thats what I hope. Regardless, I am stopping this food and going back to FROMM more delicate, as some of my dogs are elderly.
My dog has a very sensitive tummy. If she eats cheap snacks, she gets the runs. "Healthy" training snacks? Diarrhea. Several crumbs on the floor? Diarrhea.
We've tried many different dog foods (even some of the "best" ones), and they've all given her soft stool or the runs. Also, she is very picky...so with the other brands we've tried, we'd have to use food toppers to coax her to eat so she wouldn't vomit from an empty stomach.
After doing some research and reading some reviews, I decided to try this one out...and wow...game changer! This is the only dog food that my dog will eat willingly (no food topper!) and one that does not give her soft stool or diarrhea.
Although it is a bit expensive when compared to other dog food out there, every penny is worth it to keep my dog's tummy happy and our home diarrhea free!
