I adore this author and this is the 4th or 5th novel of hers that I've purchased. This story is written very well and it balances reality, the imaginary, and the supernatural. It keeps you on your toes the entire time and right at the moment the ending is revealed, everything falls together perfectly. The characters are relatable and they all have individual struggles that are resolved in a realistic way. The narrative swaps from character to character, and while this is necessary for the plot, if you don't like books that swap narratives, you may not like this one.

The beginning of this story whispers promises of the supernatural, of intrigue and innovation. The captivating characters - a good student with dark secrets and fears about her emerging sexuality, a lonely, grossly overweight woman with delightful fantasies, a homeless young woman with secret “powers” and a mysterious past - pull you in. However, at some point (about midway), it feels as if the tale is like one of Theo’s intricately knitted projects that has become unraveled. Or - to mix metaphors - the bright flame of the fire eaters putters into smoke. I can’t help but think that McMahon needed to let these ideas gestate longer. That she birthed the book prematurely. I will read her books again, because she rarely leads me down the wrong path, but this one disappoints.
