4.5 stars for one of the best books in this enjoyable series. It's a story of the Marrok's pack and their face-off against evil witchcraft and some very nasty characters. We do get to spend some time with everyone's favourite werewolf couple, Charles and Anna, and that's very sweet. But this book isn't really a romance as such, and the focus is on the good vs. evil battle and the dramas the pack faces.
I started this series thinking it was pnr, a genre I love (when it's done well), but I've realised the series is more paranormal adventure rather than romance. Yes there are elements of romance, but it's not what the books are really about. This one can't really be called urban fantasy either I suppose, cos it takes place in the wilds of Montana! Hardly 'urban'.
If you're just starting to read Patricia Briggs, this isn't the best book to start with. I highly recommend starting with Alpha and Omega, a cracker of a novella in which we meet Charles and Anna for the first time. This series is also related to the Mercy Thompson series and this book does have some minor spoilers for recent books in that series.
Overall a great addition to this series. Ms Briggs is an excellent writer whose characters really come alive. The plot is well-paced and has some great twists and turns. Recommended.
